Lets hear some thoughts on the usefulness of mink musk for trapping mink. Many books say that mink musk frightens young or female mink. I often wonder if this is really the case or just another wives tale that has "held on" through the years. Do any of you believe that mink musk really does a good job of attracting mink?
I got ahold of some really high quality glands with a good strong minky odor...

Coon Duke I do believe it's an old wives tale. I prefer not to give them a sonic blast though. Mink musk blended with food items and weasel musk or rat glands seems to work better from what I've seen. I've done a lot of experimenting recently myself lately. Terry

Kinda confirms my beliefs. Layed up after surgery...will hobble down over the creek bank later though and check a few mink traps down the road. If you would freeze any mink carcasses and save them for me. You can take out the glands. Thanks. Terry

Actually, I have been collecting mink carcasses from local trappers for a college professor. He is analyzing stomach contents of predators and I am anxious to see the data.

no clue but i think here, all that would get you is a bunch of traps plugged with coon.

Any sort of baited or lured mink set will become a coon set LOL. 11 coons and no mink or rat caught in 3 sets I made last year for "mink and rat" LOL. One coon even was smart and never caught, fiddled with sets and ate the meat off the bones on the bank from a piece of muskrat I had put in one of the holes. This season I am making blind sets there instead.
I found that the musk of a previously caught mink will make a 2nd mink get caught next night if the 2nd mink is there to begin with. Had it happen twice. This was buck mink. I would say that buck mink are attracted to the musk.

After the coon are done moving I feel it helps. When I snare a mink and it's not dead I grab it behind the neck with one hand, grab the front with another. Push it's chin into it's chest and it's dead. But it will spray like a skunk. If you do it right that set has just the right amount on it for the next guy to end up on a board.

Glands of any animal will cause interest in that same specie gland odor> To other animals it becomes a curiosity urge to investigate. I have used a mink gland lure for years with no adverse effects to my knowledge. Its odor is universally appealing so you can expect visitations by coon, fox and coyote if it is close to their travels also.
I think the idea that was started with regards to mink musk spooking mink is not valid to any great degree. I do believe however the intensity of the odor or a larger then adequate usage amount may cause some cautious behavior in some animal especially some juvenile first season mink that may have had a run in with an adult mink already.
Subtle ,adequate lure applications in a good situation will invite activity in most cases. Robust applications can slow things down a bit with some animals or cause less then desirable responses.

I do not believe mink musk deters any mink.
I'm also....doubtful on the value of using mink musk. I used to save al my glands, and use them at the set. Never found coon to be a problem with just pure mink. Anyway, I never felt I had any increase in mink using glands or not using glands. Terry might have something about the density of the smell- I'd just take a gland, slice it and rub at back of set.
I do however believe bait is good during very cold weather with deep snow. Rat or mink carcass- it doesn't seem to matter either way.
