A little while back I remember reading in TPC (I think) about a muskrat colony trap that was a float that had a one-way plunge hole in the center, if I remember correctly. I'm pretty sure there was a thread about it, but darned if I can find it. Anyone remeber what issue of the magazine that was in to narrow my search. I wanna try and make a few of those babies!

I didn't read it in TPC, but a couple of years ago Darcy Alkerton explained to me how his were made.
"The cages can be any size as this does not seem to matter. The top cage sits on a cedar platform with one way doors on each end. I have a 4 in hole cut in the center of the cedar with a tin can mounted flush on the top side and sticking down into the bottom cage which is below water level. The muskrats enter the top cage and cannot get out so they dive through the center hole and become trapped in the bottom. Works great at boat houses for nuisance work." --Darcy Alkerton

This is the one I built. Never seen one floated this way before got the idea from how to build turtle traps but anyway here it is I think this is what your looking for. Today was first day of season so I'll let you know if it has any rats in it tommorow. Jeff

Slick lookin' rig CW. Let us know how she does ... Looks to me like the answer to duck problems with float sets.

Thanks, CW! Is it baited at all, or does it just rely on the instinct to crawl up on a float?

I wired a carrot on each side on the inside. squirted my homebrew of cherry oil mixed with fish oil or you can use peanut oil. cover the whole thing with grass to make the hole inviting. didn't have a rat today in it but I didn't catch any rats at all last night we had 60 mile an hour winds and the nothing but cats and coyotes moved good last night. I'll keep you guys updated.
