tman, was thinking about the thread the other day when you were saying that you missed some mink with 1.75 in the water last winter.
I used a couple this spring on muskrat and realized a few things that you did not talk about and I'm sure that it will help catching more light critters in those traps...
2 things that will improved these traps are...
wax the traps
and if you have extra $....
replaced the coil springs with 1½ size springs.
That should help a lot.
My traps are waxed and I don't think I missed a lot of muskrat.
Just my 2¢

They work just fine for me. However, I tune them carefully and they are dyed and waxed. Mine are Dukes - nice trap.

mine were waxed, but came right off the coyote line and since it was a last minute desicion to use them in water, I PERHAPS wasn't as careful with the tension as I will be next year. I did catch a lot of rats, mink in them...but had some areas where I didn't take as many as it should.
and some of those traps, when pulled, had way too much tension. On the other hand, the mild, mild winter allowed mink to spread out more.
I'll use them again next year.

Ho, I did not know that they were waxed.
One thing that I just don't know why is this...
Take a 1.75 with 1.75 size coil springs and take an old victor #2 coil spring with #2 coil springs. Slack the pan bolt on both and It takes a lot less pressure to fire the #2.
Anybody have an idea why?

Relaxed springs, not as much tension on the levers? I have tried a few 1.75 in the water, but didn't like them as well as 1.5cs, ALL of my 1.5s are water traps, so I have enough as I have been upsizing for canines, all of those 1.5s went to the water line.

I used a lot of the old No. 2 victors on the water line for mink and rats and even coon on drowner wires, I thought they were the greatest mink trap ever made. thats a lot more than I could say about them for a land trap. Now as far as the 1.75 in the water, never really did use more than one or iwo of them in the water so I couldn't say.....B.....

I have been using the 1.75 on my rat and mink lines for many years It's my second favorite trap for these critters The old #2 square jawed so called victor fox trap Is #1 on the list.

I agree with Beav the old # 2 victor square jaws with a big pan ,The old square jaw #3 type pan . and you won't miss many mink.

I'm not a believer in big pans or oversized traps- any mink that can squeeze by between the jaw and the pan, is fine with me.
Saying that, I'll continue to use the 1.75s, but FULLY adjusted next year.
