I just started trapping the ol' flattail this past year & used a couple 330's to snap em'. My question is geared towards those of you that use longsprings to put fur in the shed. I have my eye on either a bridger #4 or #5 longspring & would appreciate any input on which one is more appropriate for beaver. Any tips on how you set these up to be most successful would be most helpful. Thanks guys!!

I would get Clint Locklears ADC beaver tapes and buy bridger no.5 longspring traps, he shows how to modify them to a 10 inch jaw spread, great trap if you only needing a few and if legal in your state, goodluck

Depending on where you live a stock #4 or #5 will do. In Indiana a #4 is plenty for example.

yeah we have to stick with #4s here in PA. all #5s are over 6 1/2" jaw spread thats all we are allowed.

Funny you should mention Clint's tapes because a fellow trapper friend was telling me that those video's were very informative & he makes a kick but trap. All the advice is much appreciated folks.

If you guys seen these traps in action and were allowed to use them, you would, any good leghold beaver trapper will tell ya that "Bigger is Better".

In my own opinion, Duke makes a good double longspring in the #5 size, even comes stock with a paws i trip pan system Bridger does not to my knowledge. From those I have spoken to on Bridgers say the stock pan system is easy to bend and lacking. Clints' traps are awesome if it's legal in your trapping area. Unfortunately, in my state I could only gain a half inch on each jaw and still be legal (8 1/2" jaw spread restriction), so I stuck with the stock traps. I don't think he sells em, but provides the instructions for the modification on his beaver video. I had every beaver above the ankle with my #5 Dukes at castor mound sets.

I just got done watching Clints tapes on ADC work. I also watched his tape on putting up beaver-they were all very informative. A trapper buddy & myself are already making plans to upgrade a #4 with Clints design in mind & see how it works. Until we can trap the beaver again I guess the rats will have to do.

That trap my friend looks like it will get the job done. We have been going nuts modifying traps this week-is it wrong to take your victor #2 double long spring & put # 4 springs in their place, weld a base plate & laminate the jaws? Them critters don't stand a chance.

I'm curious as to why you would want to do that to a #2?

What did you do to modify the jaws? Did you add some flat bar to them?

I got a bunch of used traps for a couple bucks apiece so I'm just experimenting a little-never hurts.
