I set up a bunch of rat houses bored by mink just before this last snow. The only ones that took were the ones that were not bored on the North West side because of the drifting. I killed a few but never gave it a thought when I set things up. LOL,.......Well live and learn,.......... I changed things around today. ;D

BK I should try conis in them holes I never used them. Why do mink bore holes into rat house. Probably to hunt rats, seek shelter before a storm etc, etc. There was an oldtimer who use to tell me when he was a kid when there was a ton of rats around they would follow mink tracks in the fresh snow andfollow them to were a mink bored a hole into a rat house. And he would walk up to the house quietly and place a trap in front of the entrance and he would hit the side of the rat house and the mink would come bareling out of the hole and he would catch them. Now I don' t know if he was filling me full of bullchit but some of the pictures he use to take of the fur he caught I think he was telling the truth.

Primetime, If I take the pics. you will have to post them, I don't have that down yet,..........LOL Conibear, I would be slow to call the man a lier, as I've caught them in the time it took to set up the pond I was trapping. I've found for the largest part if a mink bores a rat house he will return.

but if the house contains rats, the hole will be plugged. So how do you set that up?

Steve 95% of the time this time of year the mink kill the rats using the house. It's an easy matter for them to sit in the house and wait for the next victim. I trap lots of mink in houses where the rat's holes leading into it are frozen shut because of the mink bored holes in the side. Seems the mink just have to check it out when they return.
