Hey guys my brother and I are looking to get a few beaver footholds because we don't have any and we want to add a few to the arsenal. Give me some ideas on which ones you have. Also some pros and cons of them if there are any!!
We are leaning towards the MB650's but I can be swayed by some good arguments!!
Thanks!!!

If you do not have a jawspread restriction, the CDR is the way to go.I have caught beaver in 1 1/2's thru 4 1/4 Newhouses, but when I put away the Newhoouses there was only one place to go;CDR.
If you like a longspring, the Duke is extremely functional, but in no way compares to the CDR in holding power.I have held beaver by the azz cheek in CDR's.
If you will be having children make sets;use good #4 double longs(triumph,B&L,Champion,Old Vics)the springs are a good place for their hands and the trps will take beaver.

Thanks Edge!!
Are there advantages of making sets with longsprings vs coils or vice-versa?
I would assume its harder to bed a dbl. longspring in some spots.........but maybe not.
I've never tried setting a large foothold either, so which types are easier to set?
Can you guy throw out some prices if you know them off hand also.

Not sure on the prices.LS Traps are just as easy to bed or easier, but if its really soft I throw a piece of plywood wrapped with burlap;increases the footprint of the trap so it dont sink in the loonchit.
For the CDRs you will need the setter;period. With the PIT pans, you can pre-set the CDR's at the truck and just change out new traps for full traps.
On the subject of burlap;if the water is very clear;I insert the CDR into the bag and leave it.Very good camo and no need to worry if the trap will still hold.

Best Beaver foothold ive ever seen was the old #4 Victor Jump. Great jaw spread, great holding power, low maintenance. I pick them up everytime I come across a few, getting harder and harder to find. Anyone else still use 'em?

I quit using the #4 Jump about 2seasons after I started on them,,,,a bitch to set, weak as heck and crappy jaws.We nicknamed them "The Educators".
I recieveed some in an estate buy, there are 11 dozen available,8$ ea they are all yours.

PS There is one good jump out there, the Oberto, nice trap.

I have used Sleepy Creeks #4 long springs for targeting front feet and like them alot. I just bought some #4 Blake & Lamb jumps to use this year under the ice and looking forward to that. I wanted a large coil spring for beaver and couldn't decide what to but the MB's or the CDR's, so I went with the #5 Bridger. lol I feel they are a real nice trap can't find to much to say bad about them, springs seem to be very strong, time will tell if they hold up , but I feel they will.

If a person could target the front foot on a beaver wouldnt a 1 1/2 or 2 size trap work? Their front foot isnt all that big. Why not use a smaller trap at the under ice baited pole set where a front foot catch is likely?

If it can be targeted, yes,a good strong 1 1/2 or 2 will work finer than frog hair.
At underice sets the front foot is a very poor choice in contrast to the hind foot;which they invariably set down to eat the bait.
Once you get the hang of underice snaring;foothold and conis are moot anyway.

My preference for hind foot sets: Bridger #5 with Paws-I-Trip pan replacement. Beds rock solid, wide jaw spread, and heavy trap. However, if you haven't got the strength to handset them, then go with the coilspring options listed above. I have noticed no spring strength loss in my older #5s.
I prefer the hind foot catch in at least 12" of water to avoid 'coon.

Alright guys you talked me into the CDR's, now whats the difference if I go laminated or not?

If you ever, ever plan to use them for anything you are not going to drown;like wolves, have them laminated.
If you dont want to order them lammed up;any mod guy can do it when you are ready;but they are HEAVY to ship.
As strong as they are,you needn't worry about even the bullet footed otter pulling out of lammed jaws;no way,no how,not even on land.

For beavers just get the regular jaws. The laminated jaws are only $1.50 more per trap which is a great deal. Im thinking about getting a couple in case I ever get a mountain lion call, yea like thats going to happen LOL.

There are three traps I am impressed by: the LDL 120 mag, the jake, and the CDR.
When a CDR closes whatever is in the jaws stays there.
