THE ONLY TYPE OF SITUATION THAT REMOTELY RESEMBLES THAT SCENARIO, WOULD BE THE MINK TRAPPING IN arrghh, the beaver bogs up north. The places were much the same, because, I usually targeted them, in the channels used by the beaver to get to feeding areas, same deal as streams, pockets and resting places. One time came up on a resting spot set, that was big enough that I had set two traps, saw the coon floating in the water, ( both traps were on slide wires ) the other trap was missing, after taking out the coon, I started tracing the slide wire, sure enough, at the bottom was a nice buck mink. This resting spot was so subtle, I almost didn't set it, but those two knew where it was, or did the capture of one attract the other?

Steve,
I believe the Beav means open water or ice.
I trap minkl similar to DJ in those situations. Never set a resting station cause i have never seen one. Bet i am missing the boat a bit there.

I've only set trails and set a couple dry cubbies, guarder by a 110 mag for mink in this scenario. Trails are quite obvious around the perimeter, and gang setting half a dozen traps usualy pays off for me. Most of these lakes I'm targeting rats a week at a time, but can't help setting the trails after seing so much mink sign in the fresh early season snow. Run and gun mink and rat trapping.

I've got a couple of backwater marshes that run up against railroad tracks- so a hard edge....probably rip-rap or shaled banked. Perhaps 110s in trails would be the ticket....

Steve I trap marshes next to roads. I usually concentate on any culvert areas first as I found that is a diffinate choke point. If there is open water I will put in a couple pocket sets and if it is iced over I look for trails along the edge. I really like it when we get some light snow then will set trails they use going thru cattails. Had pretty good luck last year in trail sets in late December as we had only light snow. During heavy snow years I give up as I just can't keep the sets working.

I am pretty much all on streams now, but when I lived in Ohio, I had some ponds that I trapped rats on. If I observed mink sign, I would use a sandwich set. Find a spot where mink are guided towards the pond edge and place a rock a trap width from the shoreline. Place a small piece of fish on the rock, then place another smaller rock on top to cover the fish. Trap is positioned between shoreline and the rock. Stake trap to deep water. I didn't hammer them in these sets, but did get some.

I TRAP A PLACE EXACTLY LIKE STEVE SPEAKS OF. i Think E xtremely large and wide beaver flowages , lots of meadow grasses and sedges. You have to be HOUDINI to trap these kind of places for mink. Where are they? Forget finding trails- usually not able to be seen before freezeup and snow. So where does one set? Lower bridge work of beaver dam with bait -each end of dam. Spillway used by beaver, muskrats, otter and mink. old beaver and rat dens, Sometimes in funnel traps set in rat runs. Bridge or culvert crossings. and a few other choice places. Some trappers have had good luckon the downsream side of a beaver dam using a partially submerged marten or mink type box , screened back and baited with fish. THE bodygripper is under water at the entrance to the box and the screened end is above water. Mr or mrs mink investigates , dives and gets snaped. I,ve been told it works.

FORGOT TO MENTION , To get the box to sit right anchor the box with a 2x4 at both ends of the box top and bottom. Can use short logs if desired. BACK OF BOX FLOATS and front sinks
