very true Vanmeer- and thats because most beaver trappers use 330s exclusively around here- if I have beaver wised up on a removal job from other trappers- I can count on that the traps he was using were 330s.
Because many of these guys use 330s without much thought- plop em in and go- and that method takes a lot of beaver- great when it works. But in inexperienced hands...
A foothold or two takes care of the problem.

When I trap beavers in open water.... all I use is lure sets guarded with #330s staked with long wire. I gang set and most of the time I get all the beavers in 1 or 2 nights. Its a lot faster than foothold and I can set where I want (thieves). The lures will bring them in. I don't make mound, just a lure stick with Ingénieur or XXXL in front of those conibears and that's it... its all you need!
Now, if I encounter a hard to trap beaver in a colony I need to clean out.... I will make what ever blind set I will be able to make (deep run channel, below cross over, house entrance etc...) and i will use all kind of traps (330-foothold-snares) that will fill the need on those locations.

I have one such beaver a couple miles from my house. He is very conibear shy. Been after him for 2 seasons with conibears now. Had one really good deep water channel that he stuck some brush in and set 3 more but no go! It's become a vengance thing with him and I refuse to use a foothold. Was going to snare him under the ice, but just can't let him win! I go by the little pond when checking canine sets etc. so I am not out too much time. As soon as the ice leaves I have a new conibear set I'm going to try on him.

i catch most beaver while otter trapping, almost all come from 330s in creeks or channels in swamps, etc.
when targeting beaver, I will use the 330 when possible, also catch quite a few in footholds, i use #14 jumps, and #4 and #5 dbl with teeth added, i target the back foot on lured sets, and the front foot on blind sets..
beaver trapping is just hard work, not rocket science, thats for sure, especially when approaching it from a fur trapping standpoint, get in and get out if targeting beaver, but many can be caught in travelling waterways later in the year with both lured and channel sets...

DJ! We got to get Flintman over here. He's got more tricks than "Carter has liver pills" when It comes to trapping beaver. Open water and under ice.

Here is a basic under ice set. Poplar for bait nailed on a dead pole. 14 jump with spring tapped into saw cut. Flintman makes thisset look so good you'd stick your hand in the trap while chewing on the bait yourself.

No reply from bubcat over there yet. I'm sure he's building up a head of steam for that one Flintman "Carl" takes beaver in the 100s That's no big deal to most, but he takes the majority under ice and that's work spelled with a capital "W" John Porter wouldn't tell me ;)the number he took this year, He uses nothing but snares. Give me one choice of equipment to trap beaver under ice and it would be snares.

Missourian how did you do that ? We used the caster mound set and we ran from sunup to sunset. We have had a couple better years than that but never took any pictures. Best day was 60. People dont believe that there is that many beaver in the rivers. We hired a skinned the last 2 years, he really dont like us now but he would like us to take him beaver trapping.
