The other day I set my first beaver foothold, it was a new Sleepy Creek #4DLS. I set it where some beaver where coming out. I could tell they haven't been using the trail in a while. Anyway the first day nothing and then the next three days a connected with a nice big beaver each day. My question is I bedded the trap off to the right of the path in about an inch of water. I placed a fresh willow stick into the mud to the left of the path and peeled back the bark and added a little of Dobbin's Woodchipper food lure to the bait stick. So I have a trap to the right and the bait to the left of the path. I caught all the beaver with its left front foot in the trap. How? I was going for a front foot catch, but for the right side, how did I get the left? There are no tracks in the snow where it came out so I didn't catch the beaver going back into the water. Two out of the three never even took the bait stick. If they did I could see that they came up grabbed the stick turned around and then I got him, but that to is not the case. Any ideas? I'm glad to have gotten those beaver just don't understand how and would like to figure this out for the future. Thanks All!

Yup, the trap is on the right side and the bait stick on the left side. This is why its got me confused. Just want to know what or if I'm doing anything wrong here.

Thats what my father said! Just wondering what the beaver is doing to get caught by the opposite foot.

When you say your left and righ and the beaver's left and right, both are facing the same direction? I'm with Woody if it works, run with it.

Yes, I know my left from right! When I am standing in the water and facing the bank the trap is on the right of the trail and the bait stick to the left of it. And as if the beaver is also facingthe bank it is his left foot that ends up in the trap.

Could the beaver have come up elsewhere, gotten the bait, and gotten caught re-entering the water?
How about wind? Could they beaver have been moving to the side for a better smell before going the last few steps?

No, they didn't come up elsewhere, I checked all around the beavers pond. Wind direction, maybe!

Is there curent in the water at this location or is the water "dead"? Curent has alot to do with the way beaver aproach a set. They will always come in on the down stream side. So the curent may be pushing the beaver to that side of the set. Just my thoughts. Dale Billingsley

Yes a small current. If the beaver came from the downstream side then the bank and the trap would be on their right. I'm am catching them with thier front left foot in the trap.

I think they were all so happy to see the bait stick, they laid on there back to give thanks to the Allmighty and rolled to the right when they were done praying and got their left foot in the trap by accident. Maybe all three were "Holy Rollers". HP

Unless you've got the run leading up to the bank all fenced off, then the beaver can come to the bank from literally 180 degrees from the water.
As mentioned earlier...wind direction and water current will affect which of the 180 degrees the beaver approaches from.
Since this has obviously gotten you perplexed, then remake your set with the trap on the Left and the bait stick on the right and observe the results...personally, the only result I would care much about is 3 beavers in 4 nights!!!
Good luck!
