Don't have them here, but they are in MT where I'll be next year. Saw 3 in 5 days. I was told a local guy buys them for $5 on carcass.
Good deal or bad?

shop around, many taxidermists stuff animals and resell for big $$
also, all the gander mountains, cabelas, and every other yuppy outdoor store they are building everywhere has to come up with the decorative mounts somewhere
the biggest problem selling the quill pigs is all the lowballers that think they aren't worth anything and give them away free

The market is there as stated if one seeks it out in your market area. I sell all that I get as well far above what one would expect.

me too, but it is a VERY LIMITED market at the big prices. a guy can sell 5 a year at $50 each. try to sell even 20 and it`s no dice. at least that is all I can do and the 50 bucks is like pulling teeth to get it. as warren says, too many lowballers. and they are everywhere in every business. lol, at least all the businesses I get in, but seems never in the business I have to patronize, like fuel.

Any one ever had there dog get in a mix with one? Well I have, about 5 years back, mushroom hunting by Atlanta, MI. My Airedale Roxy was with me and then she wasn't. She ended up down a hole after one. It was not pretty, any pic that you've seen of a dog with quills in it's muzzle. This was 10 times worse. So bad that I had to take her to the Vet, to get them removed. And a couple weeks later I was still finding a quill or two. So don't take your dog with you shrooming, if your in an area with porkies. In the spring they have there little ones and are in dens or too close to the ground for comfort. I've havn't had this problem in the fall yet. But skunks, MAN!, got to be careful at the camp grounds at night!

I had a beagle grab a young one (quart sized). It's mouth was black. The dog went into shock on the way to the vet's. Everything worked out well except for my wallet.
I've had huskies mix up with them, too. What's weird is when you stroke the dog on the face and prick your hand on a forgotten quill that has gone right through.

Takes about 5 minutes to pull all the longest guard hairs out of them and put into a baggie. $17.50 @ oz. at the last sale I attended. Seem to always be a buyer. Usually get over 1 oz. per porkie. A big one with long hair might go 2 oz. Easy money. Think the hair is used for high quality paint brushes and the old time shaving brushes. Native American culture uses some too I think.

When he came out, he was asked how it was...

Hee hee. My dad says you can BBQ anything including a housecat. It is good on whistlepigs. I may try BBQing beaver next. I have eat rattlesnake, shark, gater tail, muskrat, beaver, elk, bear, grouse, quail, dove, groundhog, deer, squirrel-red and gray, raccoon, most freshwater fish including native brook trout, musky & knottyheads, deer, rabbit, wild hog-both wild & pen raised, snapping turtle, crayfish, freshwater clams, duck, ring neck pheasant, blue crab that I caught myself and no doulbt a few things I cant remember right now but no porkypines. Im part Cherokee and the people at KFC groan when they see me coming in the door for for the all you can eat special. I cleaned the whole bar out last time except for a few rolls and a little bit of pudding. If there had been any snake there it would have been in trouble too. ;D
