the cheapest is to have someone give you the wire... LOL
I've looked for a lot of sources for trapping type wire, and unless you buy in such a large quanity, its no cheaper that at a dealers.
if someone has a bterr source, I'd like ot know it. I've read about buying wire much cheaper at lumberyards, concrete places, etc. 2 years ago, I made a day of going from place to place, based on "where do you think I could find it questions" in a town of 100,000 plus- and never came close.
some places- Peerless chain for example is in my hometown and I thought I could save shipping- would be glad to sell me chain at a fantastic price....minimum order $10,000

Find a place where they are demoing an office builing, You can use the wire that they hang the drop cieling tile frame with. If one is that cheap then you must be use to dumpster diving.

Black #9 wire is sold in ten pound rolls at most farm supply stores and runs around $8-$10 per roll.

He asked what to use to make swivels, I don't think anealed wire is the way to go.

Years ago I made some swivels using non-anealed wire and had a few break. Non-anealed is brittle and after a couple kinks it will break quite easily. I wont make a swivel now with anything but anealed wire.

If you can get your hands on some old telephone wire, it's #9 and if real lucky it's galv. and already dull and don't rust. We have miles of it up here along old logging roads that had logging camps on them way back when they logged with horses. Most of these roads today are only drivable on 4 wheeler, but you just step off the road 15' or so and it's available for free.

Guys, If your needing to purchase any wire you best be getting it bought! From the price of #2 scrap iron, new steel is going to be taking another hike!

Lures are no problem but I cant find a hardware source that I can afford. Wire chain and cable are the worse.

JWR64, Since I have gone to other suppliers for material to make trapping equipment. I am willing to sell material to help meet the requirements for mimum orders. ex. cable need to buy 50,000' to get the first price break. Wax 10 ton a year for the first price break. If several of us work together we can meet these kinds of requirements.

not at comparable prices- only wire fleet farm has is 18 gauge fence wire, and coils of galvenised going up to only 12g.
this was sevreal years ago- perhaps they now carry it but a casual look last summer didn't show any on the shelves

Believe it or not....Finding black wire is a regional thing! I swear it does not exist in the south! Trust me I ran out a few years ago and it litterally could not be had. I ended up using galvanised wire.
Any place in the midwest that sells livestock fencing supplies should have black wire...Good luck.

Tman, you may have to ask them, it is kept outside the main building here because it a little oily, they might have it outside also.
