For 28.00 in material you can make up 65-70 really nice supports. I use 1/4" cold rolled, heat the bottom up and pound flat this will keep them from spinning in my soils, I then weld on 18" at the top of 11 ga wire, I make them all 24" and wrap about 6" around the 1/4" steel and tack them in 3 spots top, middle and bottom. You have an L haped deal, I like this better as I can set in the sage, grass, brush etc back off the trail and not have that wire right up by the trail helping with visual detection and with a little blending in cover they are tough to see and you have just the loop hanging out there, with the right loop height the coyote has a tough time seeing much of anything versus having that 9ga right along side of a trail.
The only changes I might makes is to weld 2 very small nuts on and use that to hold the 11 ga wire and don't have to worry about the occasional wire breaking issues and can replace that 11 ga at will. There very durable and hold up well.

are you putting the wire through the nuts, then twisting?

I'm definitely going to try the welding on of the nuts. Tried it without- just twisting, and it worked..but....

Evidentally I misunderstand the devil's hatpin. One of you said it doubles as a stake. I always understood it was purely a support system.
We should only buy devil's hatpins from Doug, it's originator. ALL OTHERS ARE CLONES!

Generation 2 DHP, could be used, I suppose as a staking method, but much prefer to anchor away from the trail.......in this case the DHP is my support, very near the trail, so I opt to anchor at the end of my snare/extension set up.

As far as using the generation 2 as a stake I've never had a coyote or even a deer for that matter pull the stake. Thats why I like them its a one shot deal. Trees are hard to come by in my area so they work great. Hopefully Doug returns my emails and has 5 dozen left for me.

Very interesting conversation about these Hat Pin thing-a-ma-jig deals guys.
Jeff I've finally gotten time to reply to your email to me, the order total for your Hat Pins is in the second email, let me know if it's a go or not. I’ve got a pallet full of them, stored in the trap building out back.
I encourage all who want to copy or try to copy the Hat Pin to do so, it's a great product and ripping it off continues to prove it. I’ve seen an Alaskan Wolf Mod made to it, and some other pretty innovative changes too, so there’s room for improvement out there.
To answer the questions of those who've been asking about where this old man's been... well BristleBack is about 50% right when he tells you that I go 12 directions at once at 999 miles per hour.
As far as being on the boards, doing any substantial trapping, and keeping my memberships up in the NTA and Nebraska FHA... well I've pulled stakes & dropped all memberships after 33 years of supporting and doing what I loved most in life... trapping.
I made this decision after I saw the real people behind the names & faces of more than one of our industry's "leaders". I didn't like their underlying greed, insecurities, and prejudices. Just like you, I've lived through that junk from unscrupulous trappers stealing traps to fur buyers down grading fur. But to see that this behavior was rampant at the top too, it made me realize that more than anything the dollar had entirely corrupted the one thing in my life that I could count on year after year - and that was a very, very sad day for me.
I guess I was pretty naive for an old man. These guys are no better than the preacher at the corner church in my town or the president (yes small “p”) of the USA, so what the heck was I thinking?? More, that’s what I was thinking; I was holding our leaders to the same standard I hold myself, and that’s not how the world works. So in the end I decided to toss what I considered the last bastion of "Real Americanism" for me into the same toilet hole that I've tossed big business, my support our government & our leaders, and those who tell that I won't see heaven if I don't pray like they do.
My wife's been keeping me talked out of selling off of my entire outfit for the last couple of years but deep down inside I know it’s a waste of her time and my patients because I'm 10,000% sure that none of it will see dirt again, at least by my hand in my life time.
I might see you guys later, but I kinda doubt it. So take care, be safe, and keep your faith if you can.

someone thats wore out and burned out and full of dispariar.
Doug- things aren't that bleak. Many of us felt your pain, and thats how the Reform was created. The things we ran into from "pillars" of the trapping community astounded us.
But someone has to stand up to them- and more importantly- provide an alternate path.
I myself hope your wife talks you out of it- and hope to see yo uaround.

I agree 100% with what Bob Wendt and Dave Plueger have said.
When one considers the unethical actions and behavior, and complete disrespect that has been shown by many at the higher level of so called "leadership", it is easy to get disgusted and to say the heck with it.
What is important to remember, for me anyway, is that there are dozens and dozens of true blue TRAPPERS out there, who have nothing to do with the BS that has fallen from above. Many have walked away from organizations because of the behavior, and I believe can be brought back by folks who true intentions taking the reins of our organizations again. It is for those people, the ones who one really would be proud to call "brother" that I continue to do what I do - and always will.
