We have limited drawings here in PA for cats......I have gotten one before but am working on another permit...partner filled his last Wed....we started trapping last Tues. for cats...
The question is based on this.... I set up an active toilet on the top edge of the ridge....We had a light snow last week....and our tracks leading in to this particular set were visible.....a cat worked across the ridge top towards the toilet but when it hit our tracks it turned and went out several hundred yard then hit our tracks again like it was heading for the toilet then turned and went back the direction it came from....
Are toilets territorial boundaries for cats??..... did our tracks deter it from going farther???... ( have had cats in the past follow in our tracks in the snow)
Any help would be appreciated....thanks

Just some thoughts;
Perhaps you were there at the same time the cat was, and he left.
Sometimes coyotes will use a cat toilet heavily enough that the young cats will shy away.
Cats have a mind of their own, I've set up on fresh cat toilets and never had a cat revisit. Which is pretty unusual, normally setting on a hot cat toilet you have them within a few nights.
Try to get more sets on his route of travel.

So was there avoidance due to the tracks, and if so, was it the visual of the track or was it residual odor the trappers left on a fresh trail? Be curious to hear from the cat trappers dealing with snow.

I've personally never had a cat do that in the snow. I've had them follow in my tracks right to sets. Cats are cats? Maybe it was really wanting to go somewhere else and just went over to investigate your tracks when it saw them, and then resumed it's orginal course of travel? Or maybe it was a coyote with it's toe nails freshly timmmed ;D ;D ;D I'd just forget about it and put in more sets.

I'm with Wood on this one;let it go,if there is a reason,it is a CAT reason........
In my 160-in-a-box days of cat trapping I cant count the number of times a cat would sit in front of the box2-3-4 times, only to enter it the next.........and get a collar.....I think it was the trapper from New York(name escapes me)that said cats are the lazy weed smoking sort who have nothing to do and all day to do it.
Aptly put.

Clefus,
Hot toilet is a broad term, kind of like a "broke" horse!
My definition of a hot toilet is one that has several different sizes of turds, indicating that more than just one or two cats are using it. And you can tell that they are using it nightly.
Good Luck!

Clefus it is easy,All you do is find the best looking Coyote location that you can. Then make a big ole flashy dirt hole and spike it with some lambs wool dipped in Catchottier. Bam ,it will catch a cat every time.
Well , that is what happens here where cats are off limits!

Cats are finicky. Seems like they all get that way at the same time, then one day they are all sitting in your traps. Don't know why, but they all seem to change their attitude at the same time, one way or the other. Kinda like women.

Thanks guys... Already had a trap stolen at the first location we caught last weeks cat at...I took down the flagging and put back in a cheap ass Duke on an old heavy drag I had----hate to give up the location or another good yote trap and drag....I am aiming on it was a hunter....if it goes again, it may be a trapper.... Still I can live with a few stolen...just part of the game....should take the cordless drill and Tapcon a hookup to the rocks...
