I am just starting to set for yotes. I have had 8 sets out for 2 weeks. Although I have managed to catch my first 2 coyotes I have seen alot more track circling my sets. Especially at an old burn site were I caught my first yote. It is a big burn pile maybe 20' in diameter. I have a stepdown right in the middle with a log for backing. Cavens Hiawatha Valley for bait and lenon's coyote all call for lure. Every day I check the set there are new coyote tracks or dropping within 5-10' of the trap.
This is happening at more then one of my sets. My second coyote was also caught at a stepdown set by the back leg. I believe he was caught as he was trying to poop on my set.
Why do you think they are not commiting to my sets. Any and all criticism is highly appreciated.
Stef, I just ordered some of you lure from Ram Connection I cannot wait to try it.
CACHOTTIER- any suggestions???

I hate being the only poster but it sat for a couple hrs and no one else says anything. # 1, be sure and set a second fresh set 10-15 feet away from every trap that caught a coyote before ,as often they won`t work a catch circle for quite some time, especialy eastern coyotes. #2 ,8 sets isn`t much, and if all in a mile area you might just be messing with 1 or 2 coyotes making lots of tracks. set more over wider areas. if you see tracks and turds they have already told you how to catch them and where. if they are wise to smells, set snares or blind set foot traps. look at stefs stinger posts to give you some ideas how to pick narrow brushed or weeded in trails. it`s so easy your grandma could do it.

How often are you re-luring? Could be you have to much lure. Also try and check your sets from a distance, you might unknowingly be leaving some kind of contamination. I'm no expert but in the instances that you have described (my experience) has been one or the other for me.

Bob has given some excellent advice with the fesh sets. In some areas they fall one after the other to catch circles. But I have not yet trapped in them areas. LOL Another thing I do is to change the appearance of the set , or your lure after a visitation without a catch. This sometimes really , really helps.

You need to find some different lure or bait. You need something that will make them come to the set. That is your problem.

Some good advice, it is alot to do with the time of year, coyotes get goofy now that mating and pairing up is on the brain, many good sets with good lure will have them just cruise on by or not have the luster at this time. You can change that some with good gland lures and urines. Also try setting the edge of the burn pile with a nice mellow set with gland lure or urine by a weed clump etc.
Not getting too close was excellent advise as wel, the further you can check them the better, but time of year plays into it IMHO quite a bit. I like to set snares or even foot traps at carcass stations at this time of year as it makes a natural area for coyotes to congregate and they do so with gusto. Good luck.
