You need to be talking to a good friend of mine that got one of sullivans tension testers. He set his at 21/2 pounds also guess what sure he caught some greys but he also missed some.Yes I am sure he missed a few birds and rabbits but he went back to the loose pan.Maybe our greys are lighter than yours and I get10greysfor 1 red so I deal mostly with the light footed animal.I take all my traps and file the pan shank down to 1/16th and then I crimp the dog eye to where I have very very little pan travel. All my pans are set to where they will fall under there own weight.I don't even own a tension tester so tell me this how much tension is created by a set trap?I don't consider my methods poor management eitherI don't have traps snapped in the trap bed and do I have snapped traps sometimes that are out of the bed sure I do but most of the time I see some sign of deer tracks or very large sets of dog traps,My management plan "If it isn't broke I don't fix it"

Lets see if we can clear up this pan tension deal.Like I said my pans will fall under their own weight so how much tension is the set trap causing?I guess you can say I am stupid because I don't know and I am sure there are alot of trappers that don't know the answer to that question either

A pan that falls under its own weight, depending on the springs of the trap- is often at that 2- 2 1/2 pound range.
You might say that tension in this range, is tension "natutal " to the design of the trap.

Tman, how do you measure pan tension?Do you use weights or do you use the tension tester by sullivans? If using the tester where do you put it on the pan at near the dog or on the edge.I know I am asking alot of questions just curious I guess because I see nothing wrong with my way letting the pan fall under its own weight.I guess its safe to say then that all my traps have 2 to 21/2 lbs of tension wheather it be rat traps or fox traps
