I`m not steve, but a dead coon in a coni or rat ina 110 or a dead coyote in a snare or even a live coyote in a beefed tricked "western" trap on extended ck. gives me not even a tiny amount of the thrill of catching a perfect healthy sound animal alive in a trap or snare that causes zero damage, zero chance of escape ,and 5-10 times the price. my attitude is anyone can catch dead or hurt animals. but very rare is the man that can take any animal he wantas alive and healthy at will and in numberts under most any conditions or regulations, as it takes more effort and skill. I`m at the point now I need thrills and satisfaction for fullfilment in my trapping, not money . but I don`t waste any money either. just todat sold the first 16 red fox from my wyoming trip for $2,400.00 - or could have snared them stone cold dead for what, 18 bucks each?

Steve- does snaring give you the satisfaction of traps? I like the fur, but a dead coyote in a snare isn't as pleasing to me, as one standing in a trap. I'm not steve but absolutely, they don't need to be thrasing around and fighting to get satisfaction. I almost prefer the snare because you don't have to jack with a dispatch and blood and all that jazz.

I have run wire thru road culverts and then tied a pillow on the other end and pulled back and "plungered" the coyote into a box trap staked at the other end. no kidding! . but I don`t plan on that for a regular successful method. had one culvert so tight we had to pull the pillow thru with the truck. man, those coyotes put on the brakes all they can, skidding all 4 feet as daylight and the box trap and me standing there come into veiw. sometimes a man gotta due what a man gotta due and a coyote gotta due what the man makes him do.

I certainly do get more satisfaction from snaring a critter than I do from trapping one!
Why? I'm not totally sure.
Maybe it is because I make the snare myself, set them where they will walk etc. I do not know.
Maybe it is just that snaring is just so much different than trapping.
I know how it makes me feel, and that feeling is far stronger today than it was when I started out as a kid.
I will say that I get MORE satisfaction from making a coyote go where I want him too than just snaring him where he is walking.
I do get just as much a kick from live snaring a coyote as I do killing him. Ask Bob. It is a great feeling to go to a set location with your best buddy, who you consider one of the best trappers in the USA, and he has a skunk in his trap and you have a coyote next to the skunk in a snare! Did it to him twice this last trip. Course, I wont tell you how many times he hammered me with the traps and I had squat! ;D
Many of you will think this crazy, but I have to say that I get more of a high from snaring a mink or a muskrat than a coyote!
Maybe it is because I have snared so many coyotes in my life and not as many mink.
Coons dont turn me on as much, but as TC says, there is a great feeling about setting a half dozen snares in one trail and coming back to 5 snared out of 6 set! I have done this many, many times over the years.
Or setting a couple of fox traps at a fence corner and hanging 3-4 snares in the fence and you come to find out you have a skunk and a possum in the 2 traps and 2 reds hanging in the fence! This trips my trigger so to speak!
But, the greatest satisfaction , for me personally, comes from teaching someone else how to do it themselves. One of your members of this board didnt believe me when I stated that you could snare a coyote in a cow path with grass less than a inch tall in a pasture, with 1/8 cable and a big loop, with absolutel no brush around. Now he is a very good man, and he likes to prove things for himself, so he hung 2 snares as I directed him to do, and the very next check he had 2 coyotes alive and well waiting for him in that wide open pasture! He went on to catch several more this way. I am now trying to get him to foot snare a few! But it seems he is hard headed and doesnt believe me again! Boy is he in for a surprize! ;D Steve

I like the snaring as a tool, but just don't get the satisfaction of a foothold.
I suppose its like conibears- I use a few, but just prefer and like footholds better.

Do you feel less satifaction using drowning sets? In my opinion I don't care if they are dead or alive when I get there the satifaction comes from knowing I caught something. Dead animals bring the same $$ and satisfaction for me.

Its not so much I care if they are dead or not, Its just I like footholds.
I like lure and bait and digging and sifting, etc.
I'll certainly use snares more each year.... and I had satisfaction at every snare catch I made... but it just doesn't give me the "pleasure"of a canine in a foothold.

I'm like trappnman, I do not get as much satisfaction catching coyote and fox with snares. I should say fox especially. Yes #s can be great but to me.... its like trapping muskrat especially snaring fox with power snare (Ram). You block all trails, tractor trails (Roads "both wheel paths") with power snares and you start catching fox without entanglement and the results is dead foxes and 90% + = zero snare locations damaged.
Its hard to explain but look, When I started trapping when I was a kid, I had couple coon and muskrat traps and maybe a 100+ fox snares... Here, when you start trapping when you're a kid... after a few rats and coon... you start hanging snares because you want a fox.
Now, what get me satisfaction is to catch coyotes in blind sets with traps... I really like that and its working real good. Satisfaction: Is it because, I started making those blind foothold trail sets couple years ago? Maybe?...LoL
On the snare issue.... Now my thrill or satisfaction is... i want a see on coyote snaring is zero location damaged, dead coyotes and no water heads.
Couple years ago.... I was big time in Ram power snaring for 2 season on fox. I liked the system and could use snares in some location I never installed a snare before. That first year...I think I installed a dozen foothold or so... All my limited time I had was Ram-Ram Ram all the time, I was blocking those fields real good and had success. One day... after a light snow, I started seeing fox tracks all over the place in real good foothold locations where I had no traps installed. To make it short... I could catch as many fox with the RAM snares at the end of the season but foothold trapping is a lot faster. The next years, I did some little test on the same farms again and proved it to my self that foothold (fox trapping) is a step above snaring when you're talking "FAST". Same deal in the forest early in dirt roads. Fox are running in the roads.... Traps are the way to go. Later... snares, bait stations are the way to go.
I'm not opposed to snaring at all... I like snaring and I use it as a tool and even after 20+ years of snaring... I'm still learning and trying to figure where and when I should use this great tool to maximize my catch.
