**And it is not good news for the stray pets. **
My directives are similar.
I typically ask,"Any dogs,cats,etc I need to worry about?"
Typical answer,"None that will be missed."
Okeydoke then.

PS I am reading abook about urban predation via house and feral cats;millions and millions of dead songbirds,etc......I had no idea.

Cats are very effective predators. Not just feral cats even your neighbors well fed cat fluffy as soon as it goes outside it goes on the hunt.
They kill rabbits, squirrels, mice, moles, shrews, voles and anykind of bird that lands on the ground.
What really upsets me is if I think about them killing wild turkey poults.
And never let a cat go because they are the best bait for canines even better than deermeat, beaver or mice.

I once read somewhere that the feral cat is the most efficient predator in North America.
Cats in general are pretty efficient, and canines are pretty low on the list for attempt/kill ratios.

I once read somewhere that the feral cat is the most efficient predator in North America. I read that same piece, but can't remember where, I think the wording went something like, " Cats are the most scientifically efficient killing machines in the country " Drop a cat out in the wilderness, it will survive, dogs, not so good at it.

Where canines shine is their endurance. They can outlast pretty much any prey they chase. Also, wolves and coyotes also evolved to work together when hunting. Here is where they are really impressive. They might not have a very good attempt/kill ratio...but they keep attempting until they kill!
Cats have a darn good chance of killing on that first strike. But if they fail the first time, the odds are in the preys favor. Not so with canines!
