going to set canines lets see...Wednesday 35 and sunny, Thursday 44 and rain...lets me think....WEDNESDAY!
I'm using dry dirt, and usually in winter trapping I use it plain cause warmups aren't a problem. But this year, will be setting in the warmup.
So- anyone have much experience using waxpaper as bed liners...to keep the water from leaching up?
I know they could collect rain, not worried about that..
any other problems, tips? Yes? No?

When I use wax paper(saran wrap works as good or better)I wrap the whole trap;just not tightly, and than cover with snow,or in your case, dirt.Use a 3 and cover well.
Back in the day I used to stick-glue a pice of sandpaper to the plastic so dirt or snow would be less likely blown off.Havent done it for years, but it works good.Just glue a pice slightly smaller than the jaws onto a pre-cut piece of waxed(or saran wrp)and wrap around.

I've used waxed paper under my traps in the past and found it to be barely satisfactory. The problem is that it gets wet and then gets limp and the only way I can discribe it is mushy.
Now I prefer plastic wrap that comes on rolls and is used in food storage. It's as convienient as wax paper and the price differance is negligable.

I am using buckwheat hulls for a bed liner. My traps took an inch of rain last week and then a hard freeze.
Although the peat moss on top was frozen, the hulls kept EVERY SINGLE trap from freezing down.
I line the bed with hulls, and then bed the trap by wedging it in. I then level out the trap and bed with the hulls. The pan is still exposed as well as the jaw hinges. Too many hulls can clog the trap. Then a top coat of peat or dry dirt.
When trapping freeze/thaw conditions, I pay special attention to the areas where the levers come up. If one of the levers hangs up, the trap will cam over when fired resulting in a miss.

I do not use waxed paper for bed liners. I use plastic, not plastic wrap either. It is the plastic from a table cloth that is used in the summer on picinic tables. They are very cheap and you can get quite a few from one cloth.
I use waxed paper for the pan covers and after they get soaken wet they have a tendency to tear easy. Thats why plastic for the beds.

I use about 1/4" of waxed dirt under the trap, this is the time when it really shines, it is impervious to mosture and the freeze thaw conditions.....B....

Question for Edge or others: How do you cover the trap in plastic wrap? Do you set trap, wrap it all the way around, then hair trigger the pan just before covering with dirt? Here in GA our winter weather pattern is ALWAYS warm wet rain fronts immediately followed by freezes. State DNR prohibits use of #3 traps for land trapping, all mine #2 coilsprings for coyotes. Have tried wax paper with poor success and looking for something better. Thanks.

I wrap from lever to lever over the top;then just fold under the bottom.Going from jaw to jaw bags the ends and can get ya nipped.
Not sure about the hair trigger part;I use the same pan tension;all my traps are the same.

Ive been using baggies like Phil talked about for years, no cutting or tearing off, come out one at a time, doesnt cling to everything they touch like saran wrap does, wax paper has a "slickness" to it I hate when bedding traps, trap wants to slide around is best way I can decribe it. Baggies stay nice and organized in their little box. Pull out one or two as needed.

Gents
Is there a baggie made big enough to put a #3 Bridger-sized trap in?

Yes,Zag,the cheapie gallon ziplocs. Not real ziplocs, the wal mart cheapies.
I have used the bags and they do not impede the trap in the least.I went to saran wrap because everytime I tried to pull out one bag,I got 10...........
With the saranwrap, you just pull out what you need.
Kinda like a D### measuring contest.

Although I have yet to give "the wrap" a good try, I sprinkle the bed with peat then put the trap in..then finish with peat and new for this year..waxed dirt....
Havent had a freeze down but we had gotten a real soaker that froze and I had to peel the top 1/4" of waxed dirt and replace it...at least the rest was good...
This waxed dirt seem to be the chit...I got a freebie 5 gal to try...now I made 5 gal more...just heated dirt and melted wax....poured together and had a mixer paddle in the drill....worked great......
