Anyone ever had trouble doing it at night?Dispatching skunks that is.Two days in a row I have caught skunks in the same spot and they were regular wise guys.It still ended the same for them, both skunks sprayed.I have noticed this on my nuisance skunks in live traps, they were easier to deal with in the daytime. It seems like I will have a run of skunks that are a pain and then cruise along for several and no problem. This morning was one of them mornings, skunk sprayed ,caught my hand in a 160,deer dug up two of my coyote sets, caught my hand in a 220 and while checking a muskrat trap the water was exactly 1/4" higher then my right wader.Don't ask me why I am muskrat trapping,I don't know.Sometimes I think I trap because I am to stupid to quit.

I heard that!!!!I had one last week in a Farmers Garage in a live trap, it just wasn't gonna happen, I couldn't even get near it!! Footstomping!! Tail raising!! I finally got a rope on the live trap and SLOWLY drug it outside and shot the little B@$^(, lung/heart shot and very little spray. When I have one that does spray I put it in a 5 gallon bucket add 1 pint of peroxide/mix put the lid on and by the time I'm home it has no odor.....B.....

Brian,do you use the peroxide and baking soda mix or just peroxide? The skunk this morning sprayed pretty bad and I ended up shooting him.My homemade killpoll screwed up and I was at the breaking point so I just shot'em.The 22 is not scent free, but is effective....Later

Could some one give me the mix ratio and how much you put in the bucket with the skunk. I've caught more skunks this year then in the last ten. My truck stinks for days after each catch.

Paul I have used the peroxide 'dishsoap and baking soda mixture for deoderizing my hands.I had just never though about doing a whole skunk before, but I tryed it yesterday and it works.I don't think the mixture needs to be precise, but I mixed app.a pint of peroxide, two tablespoons of bakingsoda and a good squirt of joy in about three gallons of water.Let the skunk sit submerged for about ten minutes swished him around and rinsed out.The skunk has a little odor, but you can stand it.

The ratio I have seen referenced the most often and personally use is (1) qt hydrogen peroxide to 1/4 cup baking soda and (1) teaspoon of liquid dish soap. I mix it up in an ice cream bucket. Don't use more soap as all it does is make more suds. If more then one skunk is to be done I increase the quantity per the above ratio. Once you've done it a few times you know what is required. Same potion as above referenced ratio can be used on spayed dogs. Keep out of their eyes and if collar is leather or nylon let it soak in the mixture for a while. The mixture can't be stored so I keep several qts of peroxide in the trap shed. The really sad thing is I ran bird dogs for a bunch of years and could have owned Delmonte's tomato juice company for all of it I bought for skunk sprayed dogs. I never put up a skunk till about 7 years ago when I found out about this formula. Who knows how much money I threw away not knowing how to neutralize the smell or how to draw and store the essence correctly as shared this past year on Doc's videos. Learning never stops if you keep looking and pay attention. JL

I just sold 21 green skunks for $10 straight, and of course about another $8/skunk for the juice. The head market is flooded but still a buck if you want to mess with it. $19 average/skunk, straght. Any coyote or coon men doing that? Heck, any beaver or fox men even, green remember. forgot the fat, works out about another $5 so make that $24/skunk. shooting and dumping is stoneage.

I called around to taxidermist the other day and the only critters that I found any intrest in were skunks and badgers, other then oddball stuff.I haven't caught any taxidermy grade skunks yet.I caught a whopper of a coon this morning in a #3 soft-catch that would have been perfect to be mounted.

I always thought that peroxide would bleach hair out? I mean don't teenage girls use the stuff as a cheap dye to turn their hair blonde (or green) and make their parents mad?
If so, doesn't it affect the skunks fur at all?
Just wondering...
