This is surely one of those things where we are all over the spectrum from using a couple of drops to using a "bunch" of lure at the hole.
I'm curious as to your methods.
I'm of the belief that you cannot spook a "normal" canine, and I like to use plenty of lure and urine. I just about always- heck, always- use 2 different lures and urine at my sets. Remakes get at least 1 fresh application of lure, and generally 2. I use urine at every set.
As matt says, no one has ever accused me of not using enough lure.
I do so for many reasons- so relures aren't frequent, so a little rain, sun, snow doesn't shut my lure down, so that wind becomes less of a factor...and most of all, because I firmly believe the more triggers at a set- the longer the coyote stays there..
Keep in mind there is no right way, wrong way-----if it works, it works.

I use very little lure at my sets. I'll put a few drops on the baking or down the hole. Sometimes I will use a little urine in conjuntion with the lure and other times I will use the urine by itself. We don't have the coyotes here yet, mainly fox and coon.

I dont use alot of lure, more or less want the lure to pull the canine to the set over the trap to investigate it.
feel to much lure might cause an unwanted reaction at some of the sets I use.
I do use alot of lure at certain type of sets, but the strong odor is not dirrectly at the set and used for a different purpose or in conjuntion with secondary responce type sets.
everyone has their own ways, guess its what floats your boat more or less....jim

I use plenty and it goes down the hole on sheep's wool in a step-down or dirt hole.
Last year I tried multiple lures (very dif. types) in one hole or two very small holes and found it worked very well.
I usually also squirt a small amount of urine on the backing in an isolated spot.
I will be trying Stves method this year on flat sets and will have an opinion on that method later. (Two wobble holes with the trap between)

I use very little lure at a set. The stronger the lure the less I use.
I feel if the odor is too strong most K9's can just stand on the edge of the pattern and take it all in. If I use smaller amounts I spike his curiosity and try to get him to stick his snoot right in the hole in order to satisfy that curiosity. Terry

Depends on what kind of lure and what kind of set.
One of my favorites is a big garish stinky set with several subtle sets around it and out aways.
One that comes to mind was a dry stock pond where I put a big old cow skull in the middle and dug a big hole next to it and threw 1/2 a badger in. Skunked it up good.
Back 20-30 feet I set three flat sets two with transplanted grass tufts and a couple of drops of urine.
Another one with a charred juniper knot dug into the ground with no lure.
Then on the dam crossover where they could see from elevation I set two urine sets, one on each end. They were 50-100 feet from the big attractor.
All traps on drags except the big bait.
Caught four first check and then a double and a single.
Figured when the pack came in I caught the first one on the main set.
Then I caught one one the unscented charred knot as he was hyper around the one on the stake. He might have just been caught blind. I can picture him crablegging around the caught animal.
The others ran over to the stock dam where they could see from an elevated point and from a distance and got them there.
I suspect the subsequent ones came later and weren't there to witness the first massacre.

If you have to use 2 different lures at a set and use alot of it for it to work good then you need to get yourself another lure maker.I make my own lures but I also use Hawbakers lures alot and I never have to use more than 15 to 20 drops at a set.But last year I stuck a blade of grass into my lure and smeared it around the upper lip of the dirthole and placed my bait on the bottom of the hole.I ALWAYS use urine at my sets no matter what. But if using 2 or more lures at a set and using alot of it works for you then by all means keep doing it.But I'm sure you could use one type of lure like Hawbakers,Lenons,Dobbins, etc. etc. and use 15-20 drops or so of that lure at a set with your urine and bait you could produce those same results.Just my opinion.

I just dip "something" (holder) ½" to ¾" inch in the bottle of lure and throw the whole thing in the dirt hole and that's all that it needs.

Foxman308 , I think you missed the whole point about using 2 different lures at a set.
I'm not a big fan of using 2 lures but at some sets, I do it. And believe me, its not because some of the lures I use are not strong ;D

Foxman- you are misunderstanding 100%.
I have no doubt a few drops "would work"- cause many users of the lures I use, including stef- the maker- believe in a few drops. In fact- a certain French Canadian once told me "you Americans use too much lure"....
I use multiple lures for many other reasons as stated- perhaps you misread that post?
Remember when I said at the begining of this thread that we all do it differently and all methods worked for different trappers? That meant- I'll spell it out now- no editorializing on how others do it- how one method is better. Thats not the tone we desire here. We all error in following this "advice", including me at times- but its a tone I want to keep here- its the secret to our success....trappnman

BIG DOLLOPS on cotton balls or presoaked lure strips. I use a LOT of lure, I then don't have to worry as much about weather. I know my sets keep working as evidenced by the craters from last years dirt holes this spring, they were digging for China!! ;D

I use an assortment of loud call lures and lots of it,along with an assortment of glands mainly cat and mink.I havent used bait or urine for quite some time.I usually use one call lure down the hole and a good glob of it.I use gland lures for remakes and sometimes just straight, down the hole.I use mink gland alot at flat sets and it works good, caught 1 yote today that way.But 80% of what I use is call lures down the hole.

I use a wick of any kind I have handy, gob 'er up good, and in the bottom of the hole. Also, urine at every set, and most cases it is on the backing. Sometimes, but not always, I will put a call lure in the immediate area. Usually around properties that I can't go on. "Ridge"

Sorry guys I was kind of rushing through this post.I did misread and now that I've read it over again I understand what you are saying.I'm sorry if you think I made a "tone" or whatever because I didn't mean to. But still I say there is no need for using too much lure.If there is I would like to know so fill me in please.I said in my post,"But if using 2 or more lures at a set and using alot of it works for you then by all means keep doing it."

Dip a dry twig or stick about 1/2" to an 1" in the lure, similiar to Stef and put it in the hole. I get 30+ sets out of an ounce of lure sometimes.
Use urine at about 50-75% of my sets. Like to use urine when using bait.
Probably half of my sets are lure only with the above amounts.
Whatever works for you.

for snotty lures I dip a twig or pipe cleaner 3/4" or so into the lure and down the hole it goes. For paste type lure the hole gets a kidney bean sized glob on the stick. I use urine at about 50% of the sets.

Interesting,
I think the dry weather out here is hard on lure.
