My holes are dug no more than 45 degrees. I actually bore most of my holes right under the sod and going slightly down under a nice rock or sod.
I have had it happen more than once that the steeper holes get me in trouble. Especially if I am not using a Large backing. Which to me seems out of place.
The yote or fox digs moves the backing and works the set. Plus alot of pattern misses.
Ever see a dog that wants a treat under a couch. It is comical. It works extremly hard. Gets down on the ground crawls. Reaches with its paws. Tries to stick its head under the couch and all. Trying to figure out the best angle of attack.
I did an experiment with my dog (65lb lab) who loves cheese. I just dont give her in large quantities unless I want the wife to blame me for freshing the air in the house. lol
I put two dirt holes in the yard both lured with cheese.
The first one between 45 to 60 degrees. Closer to 60. the other one slightly bored under the ground. She went to the steeper hole first. Why? Maybe because it was easier?
She analized the hole as soon as she walked up to it. she had it figured out instantly. Went over to it and started digging. Why? I believe she has a good vantage point looking down on it.
Did not do anything but walk up to it
My dog at least once she had her feet at the hole she was a digging machine. Both feet are at the opening tearing it up or one foot in the hole and the other one is directly across from it. I would of had to snag her on the approach.
Took her about 2 minutes and she had the piece of chunk cheese.
The other one she circled it and actually started at it from the right side then she worked her way down over the pattern then all the way around it. Even digging at it really hard at the back. She laid down, crawled. Reached just like she did when I accidentally let a treat go under the couch. She worked the set extremly hard.
Just like I would want a fox or yote to do. The other set she worked it too easy for me.
To me this explains why I have caught a fox by the jaw and usually one or two a year by the elbow.
I have pictures some where of her doing this. Will have to find them and scan them.
