Depends,
if digging is easy I hoe out the bed with my hammer, blade welded on, and dig with a trowel I customized. If digging is hard i use a pick-mattok for the bed and trowel for the hole.
I saw Doctor Bobs video and like the idea of a 2 inch piece of pipe cut down so there is a point on one end and a handle on the other. Hammer that sucker in and twist out, instant hole. I have made 2 for the upcomming season to try.

ha, what frank said! Frank, I have upgraded since the video, always improving, little less weight here and there. I now have the same identical trowel out of solid aluminum rod, with an aluminum blade even. Identical except the weight went from 4 lb. in stainless to 1 and 1/2 lb. in aluminum. Also have a hollow aluminum pipe one only 1 lb.! I question whether the pipe one will take the abuse tho. Taking both new trowels to wyoming with me for a month of 18 hr. a day trapping in a few weeks and will report back when the trip is over. Taking my old stanless steel just in case the aluminums won`t hold up. Murrays lures sells an identical knock out stainless ,copied to the exact dimentions of mine if anyone is interested. This is no ad, that is his deal, I just gave him permission to sell a copy, I get nothing from it.

I've got a heavy steel one piece trowel I bought as a kid about 40 yrs ago, one side was sharpened to use like an ax, this thing will never wear out, lol, I don't think it's made anymore.
Also use the back of a masonry hammer for hard ground. I too like the idea of Bob's pipe trowel, will probably make one out of 2" EMT.

Got one of those coon cuff augers for my dirt holes, works excellent. I use a Lesche digger spade and a 3lb hammer for beating in stakes. Last year I had to find a bigger hammer a couple of times. Very dry and the dirt was like cement.

I use my sodbuster hammer for trap beds and re-rod to ream out my dirt hole. I hardly ever use the trowel anymore, unless I want a bigger hole.

A Back Hoe ;D I like the big hole look to be serious, I have one of them hammer, blade, hollow pipe things I got at last years OSTA convention and an Eppler's all steel trowel. I have a 4lb hammer that I am thinking of welding a piece of flat stock to to make one of them sod-buster like things. ;D

Masons hammer for the bed, and one of them Amish augers for the dirthole, works even in frozen ground.

I am like Steve on this one use a masons hammer except when frozen. I like the control I have shaping my bed, and when undercutting sod it cant be beat.

Depends on the area;masons hammer,axe,grub hoe,C-4,D9.........
I made a "stamp"out of black iron in the shape of a bridger 3,in the hopes that a powder actuated fastening gun could be used to "shoot" in the hole,or at least part of it.This was,in whole *and* part,a TOTAL failure,as the charge required is far more than I am willing to soak up.
Anyone need a slightly used inline muzzleloader?Cheap?
The fire axe will now do double duty for me,I can leave the grub hoe at home.

PS Anyone that thinks using a post pounder for stampoing;dont bother.

*Anybody*can buy blackpowder, and wht the hey,I'm a "dance with the one what brung ya" kinda guy.
The idea behind the stamp was that the bed was made by compression,so you could bed the trap, cover it,use the set,and the same stamped bed fopr the next set.......another idea in the crapper.I got a million of them,about.000000001% work really good.

Damn , sounded like good idea , waht level loads did ya try? With a semi toll you can hit it twice if needed. Work on 1 to drive my anchors ;D

Post by Edge on Jul 25, 2004 21:41:24 GMT -6
"semi toll "What is that?Someone else mentioned the same thing.
Cable stakes are easy, drill rod plunger, downside is that if ya hit a rock;the only place for recoil is "up".
I have part of a stomp setter that works pretty good, but it is broken.*When* it works it will set a 15" anchor in one stomp.

Matt do you use Caven's ground hog exclusively to dig your dirt holes?
