With the 6 Forget lures that I use, for canines, I don't ever HAVE to use a change up.

coyote 200, it makes my dog want to roll. Which is ok as long as a fox or coyote reacts to it. I hope to catch them as the walk up for the first close sniff.

So what is a changeup? Does it mean you use 1 or 2 lures all the time...and once a week you make a set with your "change up lure"? Or in a days setup, you use it every 5-6 sets or so? Or do you mean- a lure that is reserved for those gnarly wised up pegleged sheep killers? I've heard trappers discuss it each way. _________________________________________ woody my boy..you have open up a can of worms with this one, as Slim always says. If an animal worked a set under the same circumstances, same moods, etc then theortically 1 lure would work all the time. In fox trapping- this almost seems the case. I know several fox trappers that take big numbers- and they use the same ole, same ole all season long and year after year. And this makes a lot of sense- a good lure would provoke the same responses each year- and with the yoy being such a large portion of an average trappers catch- lure burn out, if such exists, never occurs. But on coyotes..errr....ki-yutes.... my thoughts are differnt. Coyotes , as some might have figured out drive me nuts ( I don't hate them- I love em!) They are so predictible yet at the same time so unpredictible! I beleive in the coyote research I've read, combined with my own experiences, that the more triggers you can pull, the longer he stays there and the more you catch. Compare it to talking a friend into going somewhere with you when he doesn't want to go..."I'll drive...come on, we'll stop by so and sos.......I'll buy you lunch for heavens sakes...etc" until..."ok, fine...i'll go" So I like 2 lures at a set..and since I double set all canine locations.....thats 4 lures...and occasionally triple set....thatas 6...and a "changeup"...LOL I like having 6-8 coyote lures to choose from. But back to changeups- I thnk of changeups as "different" Fish oil down the hole is a good changeup, try mink gland- heck, I catch 2-4 a year on coon lures. Last year stef sent me some seal oil- it worked (I KNOW my coyotes never smelled a seal...LOL) Maybe a bait- gopher most likely in my case. So woody- did I help ya? BTW- when leaving coon sets out in the same locations for a while- a changeup every once in a while pays divedend. Since I like a sweet coon lure...my changeups are usually skunky- and fox urine sprayed heavy on old sets bumps up the coon catch nicely.

I usually stick with 2 lures ( at 2 different sets "location" ) for a while during season when I trap fox.
For me in my area, the lures you wrote above... I used them mostly as a change up or if I put more than 2 sets at a location.
We have our way of doing some little things differently ;D

Good post T-man. Coyote lures, in my humble opinion, are like restaraunts, you got to have somethin out there for everyone. Some like fast food, some like steak , and some just prefer Hooters ;D I dont necessarily carry a bunch of different lures, but a changup can be as simple as the quantity of lure used.

I like mink glands for a nice change up,and I also like to use bobcat glands at flat sets .

Even thou I know it is added in some of my other lures, I found a decent change up on a smart k9 is a rub or blended flat set nearby w/ nothing but some heavy castor beaver lure (Backbreaker)
It worked on a couple smart ones. after other good k9 lures & urine at sets had failed.

Steve, Can of worms I like to do things like that Let me make a scenieo for ya ;D Your in an area with heavy competion, and a steady population of K-9's (fox and Ki-yutes). lets say the competion in this area is a total of 5 trappers, 2 old dye in the wood know it allls, and 2 that's been in it for a few years and the last is a newbie ;D you have an area of say 15 square miles that all are trapping, the old timers are expecting to catch 50 to 100 animals, the 2 thats been at it for a few years are looking at a decent catch of 15 to 20 animals, the newbie has a goal of 10 ;D Season opens and all are out there making sets, but unknowling they are using almost the same lure, well the newbie hasn't read as many books or watched as many video's as he should and he starts pinching toes. soon he has educated 5 to 7 K-9's. and the others have taken a decent number of them also, since they know more of what they are doing. the K-9's thats been pinched doesn't want anything to do with the sets and the competion heats up. ie more sets being put in. one of the trappers starts thinking like we would and decides to try a new lure from another part of the country and starts to connect again. thus the change-up lure, has worked it removed all the supiocion of the sets and the lure that everyone was using. ;D ;D I hope thats a good enough picture for ya I am lucky that I know my competion, except for one person that I seen last season and no one knows who he is I can talk to my competitors and ask what they are using and use something different along with the sets themselfs. What's really great about my competion is if I get one of them wiley old dogs that doen't want to commit I can ask for help and I know I will get it. ;D And yes Steve you did answer the main question ;D

Unless your compeitors lie to you...to throw ya off track.... Heres the thing on the toe pinching- I'm of the belief that if you pinch an animal and make it shy- it will stay away from the SETS not the lures. At least for a while.

I carry (3) lures with me. If I make three sets I will use different lures at each set. But If you were to ask me 10 minutes later what I used at each set I wouldn't be able to tell you. All the lures I use work, so I'm not all that concerened what goes where. If and when I re lure I have no clue what I used at that set I just re lure and move on. I've never seen where mixing lures at sets made a big difference. Maybe you could call this a change up? Use the KISS method.
Open bottle apply lure and move on.

Beav- I agree with the remakes- but if reluring at a fresh set- I do use the same lures.
but on remakes- random once again.
although- I do have a couple lure combinations that I feel work very nice together- so if using them DO keep them in combo with each other.

You must have one hell of a memory, or do you keep records? It can't be your memoryLOL

I DO have a hell of a memory..a hell of a bad one!
On fresh sets, when I mark location in my book, I jot down the lure combo.
That way I know what initially produces well and what doesn't.

I usally dont change up until I figure Im patterned, big difference in waiting for shuffle animals to come through or actually being patterned and needing a change up.
When I change up its more than the lure, usally leave or continue to use my old sets and mode of checking in place, but have a completly different care package, set up in range with the sets that are already in.
find just about any lure will work on an actual change up, I use to like Butchers muskrat gland lure or Carmans wind river beaver lure for mine...jim

Heres a way to keep track of lure without doing any writing, use colored popsclue sticks for applying lure, I just dip in a colored stick and throw it down the hole, if smearing lure on wool, bones or whatever, just stick it into ground when done under backing or a few feet away. You get about 5 different colors in a box and just color code your lure by the color of the stick you use. I kinda am about like Beav and dont really pay much attention to it, but if i want to I can usually tell what i used. Seems the best locations and sets on downwind side are most produtive no matter what lure is used.

good tip rk- you could have a corresponding colored dot on the bottles, to make it even easier.
