Just got done watching matts coyote and cat video- a very good one I might add. Matt mentions that he trys to set 2 sets within 30 feet or so of each other.
Obviously with success.
But here, I seldom do good with 2 sets that close. I'll have both sets connect- but not as doubles. I find that I am much better off with traps set apart in the 50-150 foot range.
What is some of your experience- close together or somewhat apart?
btw matt- TrapperLarry makes a hole digger out of a band saw blade- it would work very well on your deep dirthole- A few twists and you would have a 6-8 inch deep hole- and about the right diameter.

The closer i am for fox the better, almost touching each other but it depends of the location I am working.
So far with my limited # of coyote double, I like the opposite of my fox trapping way....30 ft+ on coyotes too.

With me the location more or less dictates how close my sets are to each other, farms went out around here awhile back and I find I do better with closer set ups on the hub, or pairs of double set ups in a general location if the terrain\vegetation dictates.
When I get in pature land I spread out alittle, mostly because, I want to cover as much as possible, not real comfortable in fields, to much to look at, all at once and have a harder time figuring out the reason for some not so apparent dead ends and it seems the hub you want to set, is always in site of a road...jim

i have tried it both ways and different distances apart. years ago i was having caught coyotes ass bit by other coyotes so i started setting 2 traps 10 feet or so apart and started picking up alot of doubles so i have never changed. in the video steve len has a double in a bean field and a double in a bean field about 200 yards away. it was the same field and the same side of the field with a road thru it. we consider this 2 doubles and not a quadriple.
on the first check of the season this year i had 3 double sets up a little vally 200 yards apart. i had 5 coyotes out of six traps and a snapped trap. this was a personal best for me but still feel it was 2 doubles and a single , not whatever you call 5 together.
there are alot of good trappers with diferent styles, aint no right or wrong in my book... thats just my setup.
glad you liked the video steve, we had fun making it but it cost us coyotes...lol

stef, i guess the videos are paying off now but i hate packing that dang camera case around. i just spent 400 bucks getting the dang peat moss cleaned out of it.
my buddy len stayed on my butt all the time for not taking the time to film caught coyotes. many times they where already dead before i thought about it...lol
he really got pissed if i forgot to film a cat...lol
but it was fun putting the footage together
i wish afew more of the good coyote and fox trappers would post there thoughts on this as i`m open for good ideas.
i will say this, i seldom catch doubles with just females, there i most every time a male coyote involved. even early season with pup coyote doubles.....why???
now that i think about it, i dont think i have ever caught a female double for sure.

;D Funny that you said that... If you go on my Website and you click enter, the first yotes double you see is 2 females ;D The mother in the front and a pup female in the back. I caught 4 there... Had a 3 traps set there a pup male during a snowstorm after 2-3 rain and a hard freeze the double and 4-5 days later another pup male at the remake where I caught the first pup male during an ice storm ;D I never caught the Big male Stef

Matt, Stef, I did pretty good on coyotes last year, ( at least for around here ) but outside of snares have never caught a true double even though I gang set. Do you use the same lure and or bait at these sets or mix them up? I mix them up, sort of if you don't like this one, maybe you'll like that one. When we had fox I never had much trouble with doubles even on different lures or baits. Just looking for more pieces to this puzzle. Thanks, "Matt"

Hmmmnnn...never gave the sex of doubles much thought...but thinking back on "memoriable" doubles, ones that stick in my mind, seem to have consisted of at least one male. I will pay more attention this year. 717- if you are used to fox trapping and setting sets as for fox- and you set your two sets close together- this might be your problem. While some like matt seem to do well with close sets- I seldom do... try making your sets further apart- still within eyesight...I like 50-100 feet away but many times I'll be on 2 sides of a big waterway and set even further apart. As long as a coyote is milling about the area when another coyote has been caught, sets made on travel lanes, focal points with be found and worked. And yes Virginia, I consider those doubles!

Most of my gang sets are at least 30 yards apart. Some times I think If one coyote Is caught and the second one comes In to investigate It might just get bit or intemidated by the caught coyote and may get run off.If your second set Is to close that coyote may never get back that close to the caught coyote. BUt If you have a set back 30 yards or so the second coyote will feel less intimadated and still circle and may work that other set.

changing lures at double sets, i personaly use what i have out. if trapping with a partner he uses what he wants. i can see no difference in catching doubles ether way.
use a lure you have confidence in or bait. everyone that knows me knows i`m a big bait man for canines, i dont sleep well without bait at my sets

Matt, I make it a point to change attractors when setting up my areas. As you know I blitz my areas and think the smorgasboard effect of diiferent attractors has merit. By the way caught a triple last year all three were female coyotes.
