I think true kickbacks are a attempt to cover up and mark an area by a canine. Yes ...fox do kickback. I've seen both droppings and urine deposited. I once witnessed a hunting dog approach a coyote set ...dirthole with urine....I made along a farm road. The hunter had the dog on a leash and knew I was trapping in the area. I drove up and got out slow and quiet and the dogs hackles were up. He stopped and kicked back about a foot from the set....all the time the hunter has him tight on the leash. Interesting stuff!

since this topic came up, I've been watching the lab's while they are in the yard, and only the female has done the kickback thing, the male does his business and is on his way. I know these ain't coyotes, but it is interesting to wonder why one does it and the other doesn'ts
