Is this why?
A screen gives a sort of continuity to the footprint- that is with a screen you don't have the pan (hard) and the dirt (soft).

I just this year started using screen on all of my 2's and larger, I know for a fact I caught more coyotes because of it.
Did I catch every Coyote that fired the trap?? Not a chance, but I did catch more than I would have with out them.
Here's some food for thought, a Coyote can scratch through 1/2" of clay like it wasn't there and many times at the set Coyotes scratch.
Now if the trap is bedded right and you didn't make the bed to big where he can catch a jaw and if you using bigger traps and covering deeper( 3/4"-1") you will catch some of these scratchers, I'm convinced.
A friend of mine was having dug traps this year and couldn't figure out why, he switched those sets to wire screen catches and digging all but stopped and his catch went up.
I run about 2 lbs of pan tension and bed my traps rock solid and only make the bed as big as it needs to be, the bed has shear walls so to speak and I cover deep, I believe some of these scratchers are caught like this.
Lets hear some more opinions on this.....B.....

what I mean is that if the dirt is packed well inside the jaws of the trap, the only place that is "soft" is the pan area. There-fore the screen will not increase the kill area because the only soft spot is under the pan. Now if one is to not pack well inside the jaws and then sift over a screen , yes it would increase the pan area. This is only my opinion, but I would much prefer to have the pan as the only trigger that sets off the trap. I like everywhere except the pan to be packed well. I tune my traps for about a 1/6th or less of pan deflection. When they step on the pan and feel the soft, it's too late and it is normally a good pad catch.

Mark I'm not sure you understand how we are using these screens. Were putting the screens that are wider than the open jaws of the trap thru the jaws of the trap before we set it, then we set the trap and the dog goes thru the screen, You can pack the dirt over the jaws but not much more than about and inch or so past that, cause the screen is tight and you can push it down and if the trap doesn't go off the screen would just flex and move back up.
Like ChrisM pointed out in his reply on here it does increase the kill area but not to the point of anywhere in the jawspread. I probably run a lighter pan tension than most with screens and I do have some sprung traps, but it works for me. .......B.......

I understand Brian. I was using the screens without tucking them under the pan and it was a pain in the butt. They seemed to want to wander a lot and I didn't like that. I see what you mean.
