The location- "tall" hayfield, set aside behind it. Notice color variations of grass- a natural guide. While it doesn't look like it- this is flat ground, but by using color, you can get depth. You can see it better in the catch picture. With my masons hammer, I cut out a basic triangle about 4 inches deep. The hammer is 13" long for comparison. Finished cutout- trap is bedded in between trowel handle and pebble. Note hole goes straight back and is deep. I have caught a lot of coyotes with the set exactly like this- but we have to "improve" so... A coyote's view of the set- To the basic triangle, I have shown how I sometimes add to the set- more guides, in this case a clump of dirt over the top of the hole. I also took the blade of my hammer and made a "kickout" of sorts behind the trap. (Edge- ice cream pail in hand LOL) See how I "tucked" in in the different colored grasses- you can see how the colrs and grass lines guide in a coyote. A close up view. Results 2 days later- a nursing female in the rain, summer coat, ear cocked back....collared and released. --------------------------------------------------------------- For comparison of types of sets to fit the location, here's a picture of a guy I got a later- a big male> Notice the bare spots on the road- perfect walkthrough dust circle type sets- you can see the potential for natural guides, etc. I look for this type of setup as my #1 choice-

Nice pictures!! On this particular set, how far back would you say you have the pan of the trap from the hole??

Nice pictures. Very natural looking set up. I have seen pictures of other types of step downs that just did not look all that natural to me. Thanks for posting the pictures.
