I am getting ready to have coyote trapping instruction this fall on my line. I was curious how many of you guys have had trapping instruction, formal or informal? I am just a part time hobby trapper, but I thought it would be a great learning tool and help shorten the learning curve and help with my effieciency.

My opinion, and just my opinion, is if a guy is going to give instruction on Your Line, HOW come he has time to go on YOUR LINE, Where is HIS LINE?

I don't entirely know his situation, but I believe he is no longer doing contract work. I also think that a couple days of instruction, probably pays more than fur trapping. I do not know the extent of his schedule either but I know he is doing instruction on someone else's line before mine and when he leaves it will be to head to someone else's. I look at as a great opportunity for someone to look at the country I trap and maybe help me to see what I am doing right and wrong.

Yes it is Slim Pedersen. I am looking at it is a great opportunity to learn from what I understand to be one of the best. Ultimately this post was to see what other people got out of instruction and how it went. I remember seeing a post previously about a guy that went out with Bob Wendt and got a lot out of it. I also understand that others on here have taken instruction form other people too. I know some people say it does matter where you go for instruction, but I though it would be greatly more beneficial for it to be done in my country instead of out west.

Well if you are going to pay someone for instruction on your own line, a fella like Slim would be the route to go....bound to pick up some useful tips. Keep us posted on how it goes.

I am betting you would never get Bob W to come to your trapline unless you have a massive feed lot close by

I think instruction and who you choose, must be based on experience of the trapper seeking instruction. That if you don't know the questions to ask, you aren't getting what you should out of the instructions.

Be sure and write down all of the new concepts you learn. Do it as soon as he leaves. Once written down you will retain 80 percent more than just relying on your memory. I would even have my questions written down before he goes out with you.

This last weekend Slim came and ran my line with me. I had a great time hanging out with him and listening to what he had to say, not just about coyotes. He told me some things that I might want to change and also some that I am doing well. It was really nice having him go on the properties that I trap and take a look at the layout. He taught me as much about coyote behavior as anything, how they hunt, where they travel, etc.. I caught some fox and coyotes while he was here, I would have liked a few more, but that is true all the time. I wished I had more traps out, but I am a part time trapper that traps before work.
He stayed at our house so we were pretty much were talkin trapping the whole time. My buddy Freepop also got to come along one day and see what Slim had to say. Slim has been doing this type of instruction since September and will be continuing through January I believe. He also gave me some lure and bait making advice, as I like to dabble a little bit. Overall it was a phenomenal experience and I would recommend it to anyone.

Yes a great guy and soft spoken. Spent time visiting with him at various NTA conventions. His lures aren't half bad either. I liked talking to him about George good I found that really interesting one time.

I liked talking to him about George good I found that really interesting one time. I really enjoyed hearing his stories talking about other trappers, some big names and others I had never heard of. You mentioned his lures, I have never used his lures, he never once tried to pitch them to me. The only time he talked about them was when I asked. I would be putting in a set and he would say you might try a mouse based lure here and I would ask which one and he would say there are several out there.
