couldn't tell you about gas augers, but love my impact hammer drill. A battery last 10-12 sets, and I have a couple, plus bought a charger to have in truck, so always have a good battery
have tried a couple of augers- by far the best I have used, is to cut off a coon cuff auger (single blade)

I have a freedom brand that is well built. I have used it a little last year and with my hitachi drill seems to do well in my soil types. Really hard ground might want a hammer drill. Mine isn't hammer type but has a ton of power and works Weill in my loamy soil types found down this way. Hitachi makes some awsome power tools and many come with lifetime warranty!

I don't understand because they are a single blade, if you cut that off you would have nothing???

I found in my soil, the auger type blades just didn't cut through the dirt like I wanted so had a coon cuff drill laying around, and I cut it in half, and then ground flats on the shank to use in my drill, just to see if a single blade was better than an auger blade.
For me, I found it to be much better in digigng into, and bringing dirt back out.

Stalker Fabrication makes as good of an auger as I've seen and used, along with other HD trapping tools designed for long-term use and abuse...... stalkerfabrications.webs.com/I have a couple Glenn Sterling made that are industrial strength as well, though I am not sure they are easy to obtain...... Rich Kaspar makes a good one too...... Zagman

I just found a single blade, for me, works better than the continous auger type.
