The alcatraz is a good trap, but really prone to bait stealing, whether it be mice, etc I have been playing with them, not sure on other traps. I am going to try a different make this yr. Not an expert by any means on dp traps. Lots of options out there.

Looked at Alcatraz too big and bulky try some coon daggers I think you will be happy with them.

Looked at Alcatraz too big and bulky. . Too big & too bulky? ? ;D ;D I bought a handful of Alcatraz's for last fall and never had a coon complain about the trap being too big or too bulky!!! The Alcatraz is the only dp I've ever used and I can say I had to quit using them last fall because I was having to screw around with constantly being side-tracked on my coyote line with those greasy, 4-5 color, suckers!! It was just way, waaaay, too easy to catch coon with them!! Maybe the same thing can be said about EVERY OTHER dp, I don't know nor care to find out. A tablespoon of Pro Coon/fish oil soaked fish pellets and I was good to go.

seldom, I think you can pretty much same the same about any of them
the concept is simple- the shape of the tube or this or that shouldn't have any bearing on how they work, and I don't buy the arguement that coon pass by one brand, to go to another
I would be curious, if anyone has used enough of several brands (ie i.5 coils where some are far better coon holders than others) of dps long enough to have a good honest opinion, that one brand is far superior, or inferior in their task of holding coon.
I've only used 3 types- dukes, grizs and some prototype models and they all seemed to hold the coon abotu the same- rare was one fired and no coon

I use the Dukes, grizs, and I bought a few alcatrazs when they were first offered at 10 bucks a piece from W-Nation. All seem the same. Only thing I've noticed about the newer griz is the longer anchoring arm being a little difficult to shove down into hard / frozen ground. I've bent a couple alcatraz anchor arms before in clay ground. Being lazy and not doing a pre-hole. You'd think I'd of learned from the first time.

I didn't think they were big, but had alot bait stealing , don't know what was stealing, probably alot of mice. I didn't have any problem catching coon in them or holding them either. Did you put the pellets under t he washer or on top of it? Just curious, maybe baiting or doing something else wrong? Thanks, greg

Thanks, greg I just dumped the pellets in and as you'd know, they just went to the bottom. I will say Greg that I didn't like the way the washer laid so I straightened the ones that needed it. I also tuned the trigger a little with a file.

Each to his own but I don't need the extra metal to catch and hold coons. Also not a big fan of pellet baits as time goes along except for cheap/easy chum outside the trap. If you limit access the better off I have found them to be. But if they work for you great!

I ran 14dz last year 7 duke/griz and 7 Alcatraz. Youll have escapes w/ both eventually one really isnt much better than the other.
I do feel the Alcatraz was quicker to get in working condition than the other 2, I wont ever use another DP with a pull only trigger. Definatly put some loctite on the bolts of the Alcatraz the bolts are just a shade to short for the locking nut.
The coon do get wore out quicker w/ the Alcatraz theres not near the catch circle w/ one of those as the other types.
Heres where I think alot of guys think their having escapes: Coons are just flat greedy when they come across a DP 1 of 3 things happen they get caught (hopefully), they pick it up and dump it out, or they try to take it with them resulting in the trap chain pulled tight sometimes firing the trap even though he was never in it.
Ever notice the ears of corn in the woods way the h$## away from any field, yep greedy coons.
Ive ran strictly DP's for coon for several years now, I still havent caught anything but coons, possums, and skunks. I havent caught a skunk in the Alcatraz yet, Im starting to think the trigger maybe too far down for their short arms and thats fine by me.

Not saying coon don't carry corn but I know fox squirrels carry ears into the woods. Jim
