Maybe this has been discussed before, but has anybody personally seen a large 2" split ring fail when coyote trapping? Not a friend or heard about but personal experience.
I have never had a failure, heard about it---but wondering.

I shouldn't have added the "Not a friend or heard about" part on the above post, this isn't trapperman.

A friend had a lion pull one into oblivion on a coyote trap this winter. Then the lion took his trap and left. He had to run it down with dogs to get his trap back. I personally saw it afterwards if that counts. If not then no, I haven't seen it because I don't use them.

I have.
bought them at a convention, deemed HD- lost 2 traps before I wised up. You could take the trap, jerk it hard several times, and the ring would open.
I've been told- "didn't have the true HD"- and that may well be true- but I'm no longer interested in finding out
but the only thing I've ever had open a Jhook and take the trap- was a tractor

I've also had bad experience with split rings. Lost two coyotes before I switched things out. I would guess that what I had were poor quality but I hve not tried any others.

Years ago I got some "heavy duty" ones from an NTA I attended. Two mangled by coyotes which got away. One completely straightened out by a wolf when he it the end of the chain. Never used or tried them since.

I use split rings and am totally satisfied with them. However several failures have been noted by others. The question that comes to my mind is what type of chain set up/length is involved? I have 3 links-swivel/jhook-3 links-swivel/jhook- 3 links- trap attached. Not much opportunity for the yote to generate a lot of power.

on mine, a couple of links more of chain, but otherwise about as you describe

No good for me. The split rings split. I use quick links instead which hold well. Rarely, I have had several quick links screw themselve open when an animal is caught, but the cable extension I use for tie offs still held and the animal was there. Had a lion bend open a quick link but it still held the darn thing. Dumb cat too. Caught it twice in the same set three weeks apart. Broke two Bridgers apart, bent a quick link, but the traps gave first.
Quick links for me. No split rings. Lots of experience with both.

Phil, IF I had Lions I would never use a split ring. I have pulled traps before by way of the rings and if the pogo is deep(I use pogo's) the ring will give.
