those that know me, know I like old school and to keep things simple- if a mink trap worked good for my dad 50 years ago, its going to work the sme for me today.
but, I got a couple doz 450s from my uncle when he passed, and have been using them last 2 years as mink/rat traps.
I really like them- a jaw spread like a 1.75, but they set with the ease of a 1.5 and in fact, often they seem easier to set with just a quick twist to open them. I'm not sold on the center swivel, but in soft mud, doesn't matter and haven't lost a coon out of them yet, and of course they take care of rats and mink quick.
if gearing up all over, I'd be real tempted to make them my workhorse trap
anyone else use them in water? If so, whats your take on them?

Tman you must have gotten the fox version? AS they make them with 2 different set's of springs one weaker and the others stronger.
Also are your dogs bent down at angle with the PIT pans?

I am planning to up grade my canine traps next year. I will be getting rid of my 1.5 Victor soft catch traps and may some of my Victor 1.75 which are laminated, center swivelled, shock springed but only two coiled. I was looking at the MB 450 as a replacement. The non fox special seems very strong but don't know how it will do in an area that is about 50-50 red fox and coyote. I am sure it will hold yotes but is the jaw spread an issue for yotes? I prefer smaller traps and always have. I don't know why I just do.

Bryce I would gear up towards the coyotes first and the fox second..................
A 4 3/8" jaw spread is a mighty tight area for coyotes. Even though you prefer smaller traps.
I have found the 2 bridger all modified and shock springs to do a decent job on both.
I use all PIT pans on them and my 3 bridgers for coyotes all of mine are offset as well.

Makes an excellent front-foot beaver trap, IMO. Now pack MB750s for hind foot catches and MB450s for front foot catches.
