and our coyote season for 2012 is in the books. Like Possum, its time to hit the water and get some of those big money rats.
had 4 weeks of mostly dry, 1 week of mostly wet but manageable
couldn;t get the screen I usually used, so went to Menards and bought a roll of their screen- and while It mighht be lighter than some like, its the best screen I've used yet insofar as laying flat on the trap- very pleased with it overall
never did get out the big number of traps some guys like to run- it seems like for us, 60-70 traps per loop works out the best. We did try hard to eliminate overlapping setups, and did a better job of it as the season went on. Doubles were down from last year but last year would have been a hard year to beat vis a vis the amount of double. did get a triple this year.
As always, had some spots that are usually mediocre turn out to be "hotspots" and of course some spots that always are hot, that weren't this year.
Had one with mange that I tossed- in a good market it wasn't the worst, but in this market it was
had one old male this week that was blind (pic #8)- one eye gone, the other cloudy- when I skinned him his face was full of BBs. took maybe a doz that had BBs in them, but usually rear end. a few days earlier, we saw one coming into location, I took a shot with the .22 but missed- I'm thinking that was him, because he acted strange insofar as spookiness when we observed him.
put up maybe 90% on wood- skun 100% in the field and love the front mount skinner
mentioned before had only taken 2 peg legs ever, last week picked up the 3rd this year
We are happy with our loops, and happy with the order- so those are going to be permanent loops, and will only be tweaked as each year dictates.
Was real happy with our use of peat this year- had an absolute minimum of digging because of peat, and I still say the secret is lots and lots of peat and minimal dirt
Today will regroup, and tomorrow will start setting out mink and rat sets. With the small number of coon, I'll wait a bit before setting up coon water sets until I get all the mink etc traps out
With the next week being in 50s during day, REAL tempting to keep going on coyotes- but at the same time- nice to hit water when its not ice and snow as well
but all traps pulled, ended up with 6 yesterday so a nice finish, and a good consistent last 2 weeks. no real weak loops this year, all pretty much alike insofar as numbers- which is fine by me
some pics from last few days-
