in 16 days, I'll be skinning coyotes.
I don't think I've ever had a year "go by" so fast as this past year.
Done:
traps dry dirt peat gophers in freezer truck lures/bait
to do:
1 more permission day- next Tues make more disposables order more name tags final buy of misc walmart type stuff buy lics
8 more days of gopher trapping, a few small setups left. then have 5 bounty meetings over next few weeks then can quit thinking about gophers til next spring. Been a real bitch past 6-8 weeks- pretty much no rain, not digging much and little small holes in hard ground when they do- earning my money for sure no record year for numbers, but better than last 2 years.
we can snare beginning 10-27. so while not going out of my way to snare, will for sure have snares in the truck and set them up in an opportunistic manner, and hopefully will give me a few more yotes this year.
I seldom have a goal (numbers-wise) but do have one this year- time will tell if I hit it, a lot depends on what I have for the new loop. the poor loop of last 2 years is no more- anything worthwhile has been moved to another loop, the rest have gone by the wayside.
been throwing out some coon carcasses on my opening loop- will see if that jump starts things. looking forward to using my new skinner, thanks seldom for the idea, etc
so starting 10-11 until 11-16 it will be coyotes and after the 20th will be adding coon, fox, badger, etc
might go deer hunting, might not but will start setting water thanksgiving week
should be a great season, my health and attitude is top notch-
good luck to all of you, and I hope your expectations are realized on the line this year.

Exciting Isn't It. I have 400+ traps just about ready (adding pinch pans to some). Stakes and stools are all loaded In the trailer. Colony traps are also loaded. Heading out on the 15th will spend a few days pre setting stools may not hang any traps on them. Season opens the 27th. Then once that Is done I'll start trapping coon. No closed season on coon. I might convince myself to trap some coyotes but It's going to take a lot convincing. I think I'll stick to the coon trapping. Worth a lot more money and a lot less time.

Killing snares or deer protecting ones?

jim- snares- we can set anything here, up to and including RAM snares
remember that year and location well- not that good the first year, but its been a constant and consistent producer every year since then
Im sure my number isn't your number, but good to see you have confidence in me......

jim- snares- we can set anything here, up to and including RAM snares No kidding!!!! Even Rams!!!! Damn, and we get downgraded to a useless 4.25" deer stop, non-entanglement setup. Are you ever going to consider getting heavy with them once you get a decent snow cover? Damn, I wish we could snare again but it's dead and gone!

Here's a "2-fur" for Steve. It shows one person's rendition of "bait'em-up" AND power snares. Ya, I know, things are shaky but get past it. You may want to watch a few of his other videos when he's checking snares. youtube.com/watch?v=J6AeFzGkCtY

Well they say time goes by faster as you get older and you are getting old.
Just imagine how fast time goes for mister Mather lol.
I'll get keyed up about the 15th or so of Nov.
Wont be trapping many rats at home this winter so a warning to southern MN rat trappers.
You better get them before the ice gets safe for a 900lb snowmobile plus a 275 pound dumb trapper.

jim- the number comment was to 1080
thinking about 2005 yesterday while out and about, and remember it well. we had a wet summer, and a very wet end of sept/october- harvest was at a standstill and by end of oct most beans still in, and corn wasn't even really started beyond a few choppers.
and weeds and tall grass were everywhere. It surprized me to see I made some flat sets opening day, because 2005 was the year I went away from flat sets (because of all the grass & vegitation) to more hole sets, and that progression has increased to last couple of years I made very few flats sets.
trouble with snaring late here is this- we cannot yet snare on public land, and pretty much all the marshes, meaning good winter habitat, are public land. and about all our field and fall habita cover is gone. Why I never snared much, becasue by the time we could start in dec, not worth the effort- but early, with weeds, etc up, its worth trying again
we do have one stupid law- we cannot set a snare in a deer trail
at first glance it makes sense, but in winter, hard to find a trail thats not a deer trail- for example along creeks- great canine tracks in the trials I make, but plenty of deer as well.
300? boy, I'd be a tired man if that happens- I've got my sights set a mite lower.......

I figured we had gone far enough on the political stuff, so edited your last political edge post- I'm sure you understand..............
I might have killed all my coyotes last year, so might not have any to trap this year....... HA!
my goal is more than last year and less than next year....hows that?
goals are nice if you get ahead, but a real pain if you fall behind- then I find it takes the fun out of it cause I'm always thinkking I need to do better, to catch up, no not "fail"etc.
so I do the best I can each day, and the numbers will be what they are.

Tman I wish you the best but goals is what pushes people to be great. Look at anyone who excels they are goal driven people.
I used to make goals and it was fun to try and live up to them, I didn't always succeed but the drive to get there and beyond kept me from getting bored or cutting corners.
For now if it is about teaching young people and my kids, that has been the thing I'm goal driven on at this point. When my kids leave for college then back to Goals for ME!

Not to fired up yet. Summer weather,so dry I'm thinking driving disposables will be tough, four dollar gas ,no crops left. Think I will sit this season out. lol No I got big plans as usual although after season bests a year ago on rats, coon ,and mink I got lots of hard work in front of me to have my best year yet.

Rats are building houses Paul.
Found two more lakes in southern Mn Paul, snowmobile is in the shop gstting new shocks.
Goals are arbitrary. All one can do is have their stuff ready and nuts and get it when the hammer drops.
Water season opens on the 27th this year. Historically taht leaves northernMn Nd with a chance to be froze up in a week.

Haven't really scouted any yet Steve. It turns a little cooler and heaven forbid we get a little rain I'll start getting real serious. Got some trap work to do but that won't take long. The market looks ok got to find some decent animal numbers

Just finished the last of the waxing so all traps, drags, and pogos are ready.
Steven, I got the call last week that my sled is in and my trailer is ready for it. When I picked up the trailer plates at the local ORV/snowmobiles sales I was bs'ing with the salesman and mechanic about picking up the sled at their other store. Since I haven't rode a sled since the early 80's I was bs'ing with him about loading it on the tilt trailer. Everybody got laughing pretty hard and he said if I let him know when I was going over to pick it up, he'd call his salesman over there so everybody could turn out to watch me drive it up on top of my truck!!! ;D ;D. Or he said, if I wimped-out, they'd load it with a fork truck or if i had the balls to try, they'd use the forklift to get the sled off the top of my trucks' cap!! Everybody thought that was hilarious as well' ;D ;D
