Stopped in to see Beav last week.........The shed was in FULL "rat attack" mode! Regardless of price, Beav and Mark will have the ND rats nervous. Picked up a few neat "rat set" ideas while I was there. No matter how old Beav gets, he's always thinking (mostly about trapping).................................

my prediction- not even close
I don't think rats will be as strong this year- but I hope I'm wrong-
if coyotes and coon hold steady from last year, and if mink and rats improve, it will be a big year

But thats not bad.

A lot of things sold at NAFA and the cheque is in the mail for year end in 31 Oct, plus their mailing clearances. The 10.40 were 3 xl mid grade spring grade.mine were the same price lots of the beaver and yotes moved and who cares about coons.

My friends last 22 rats sold for an average of $11.50. funny they were 3 different sizes, 2-3 x, xl and L and there was only .25 cents difference between top and bottom. Looks like any decent size rat at is not shredded or paper thin will bring decent money. You know also selling off a bunch of PT fur two weeks before season at robust prices will help ratchet up volume also. No better way to get steel laid out than get trappers to believe they will make good money. Bryce

Looking to me Hammer, like you should have forgotten every other critter on the water opener and targeted rats. There is a pretty good rat population in the southern half of this state.
2000 rats might have gotten you 25k.
Add in another 1000 1500 this winter and you would have been able to go to the Riveria and find that Victoria Secret model.
Heck I'm almost wishing I'd have taken my weeks vacation on the opener and caught 800 to a 1000 myself.

I think this Michigan auction might be a little extreme but it sure looks like rat averages will be closer to fifteen than ten if things continue like they have. Best news is I think all other fur is going to go along for the ride.

Sometimes I pick up a pelt of wild fur and wonder how something so beautiful and luxurious can only be worth the prices we have been getting.
In comparison man made fabrics are complete trash.
Comsidering today's economy and the wild fur populations, I think 10 to 12 buck net average is about right for rats (after commissions) on a long term sustainable basis.
The 20 dollar range is getting to levels where over trapping will put rat populations at risk, unless seasons or limits are imposed.

10-12 plus consistent prices will put populations at risk as well- I doubt if there is a hut on the upper mississippi that hasn't had a hole and a trap poked into it

Many more trappers, much higher harvest during the 70's, more rats every year. Populations did not crash until trapping was at all time low.

Many more trappers, much higher harvest during the 70's, more rats every year. Populations did not crash until trapping was at all time low. Habitat, habitat, habitat. What's happening minus the drought out there is a shame. Throw in the drought and you have no wildlife. Funny how the Dems are suppose to be conservation and enviroment friendly and wildlife conservation is being set back fifty years. The crop insurance policy inables farmers to plow wetland that has never been farmed and then collect insurance on it if they get no crop. Just one example of the no duck,no pheasent, no habitat policies we have.
