lots of urine where you have porky's and jacks would see your traps full of both. If I'm after just coyotes less urine is better than mega misting the entire area IMO.

In view of the fact that the coyote inveritably urines up the entire area during his time in the trap, how does applying additional urine to the set encourage any more porky or jack interference? I had a coyote a couple of days ago dump what looked to be literal ounces of urine into the circle as I approached him. I gave it some more on the remake.

If a coyote dumped ounces why would one need to add more?
If you trapped in areas with porkys and jacks you would see remakes and fresh sets with those urine smells would take a large share of both. A trap filled with either leaves no room for it to take a coyote. That is why a fresh set is great to have on the site. A torn up location with all that smell is very enticing to many non targets, again some good like 60.00 badgers or fox or for some even coon, but when working just coyotes at coyote sets the less urine the better IMO.

Admitally, I don't have porkys or jacks to contend with. As to why add even more, because my coyotes seem to like it , and if it works I'm going to continue with it. I agree it is a good idea to have a fresh set available, however in my area with my coyotes it appears that the more the set smells of "animal" the more attractive it is. This was the sixth coyote at this location, third in the last five days in this set. The "fresh" set is still hanging out waiting it's turn.

if you have rabbits, possums. deer, etc and etc- a DIRTHOLE attracts them as much as the urine does
I get no more incidentals by misting a set, than by using a few drops-
you want to avoid incidentals TC, change your set locations.

How do you decide if they like the ounces left by the trapped coyote or what you have added on top?
The only thing I see alot of urine at a set do for you is help in a way with a rusting trap/ mask the the odors somewhat on the trap, outside of that never saw where adding a pile made a big enough differance to make it worth while.

Not as easy as that Tman. You catch coyotes in the best places some of those happen to be where the non targets are at times, so I lesson my incidentails by using less urine and loud lures at certain times of the year.

TC, I'm not saying everyone should do as I do, I'm just telling what I do.
I know without a doubt rabbits are attracted to urine- but they are attracted to fresh dirt and a hole as well- and I've found in rabbity areas, that it doesn't matter if you have no urine, a few drops of urine, or a lot of urine-
if you find using no or less urine eliminates rabbits, then by all means you need to continue.
but me, personally- and I've gone back and forth and back and forth on this over the years- and every time I stop doing what I know works best for me, my success rate drops.
and finally, I've just said screw it, and came out of the closet so to speak and state boldly "I USE A LOT OF URINE AT MY SETS"
I've been called a rank amateur for doing so by some- so be it.
Now I say at my demos- lots of people say I'm wrong, but lots of people have problem with remakes. I might be wrong- but I don't have problems at remakes, and if you do, perhaps you might listen to some "unconventional" advice.
although how unconventional it is, is unclear- lets just say- unpopular.
as far as a coyote peeing at a set- there are hot spots, by misting, the whole set is a "hotspot" vis a vis urine- after all, urine isnt a lure is it?
you stated you never see any difference after misting- tell me, have you ever done it?

lots of times i just rebed the trap... feather out the edges like stated above and squirt a liberal shot of piss right down the old hole

TC
When I state my coyotes seem to like it, I don't mean to imply that I know that my urine application is what is tripping their trigger. What I mean is that the way I construct sets seems to appeal to the animal enough to give me a relative measure of success. One element of that is urine, quite abit of it most times at both new sets and remakes. I don't have concerns with catching in remakes the way I'm doing it and as such will continue that way. If I lived in a different locale I might find that I would have to modify my methods but I don't so I won't. Do I catch every coyote coming by? Not a chance in heell. I asked about increasing % of doubles in another thread but as of yet only Steve has offered up. 1080 gave me a little in the video clip. I appreciate that 1080.

Tman yes I have used urine and still do but not to the same degree as years ago with the heavy misting . When I started doing predator control my goal was to catch a high % of the coyotes that I was setting for and lower my % of non targets, I don't need to catch porky's, rabbitts, badgers or coons. I needed to remove the coyotes. So I started altering some things and through time really lowered non targets and kept my coyote % high. Lure and urine useage a part of it along with set location as well.

I guess my point was, at least in my area- that if you were using lure- amount of urine at the set, or lack there of, never reduced my take of incidentals.
the dirt itself is a major attraction- esp to rabbits. as are any lures, and does 1 oz of urine make a set less resistant than 4?
I personally don't think so-
then why not increase tension on your traps- you are going for a 30 lb animal, surely you could increase tension to eliminate 90% of your incidentals, and still not miss coyotes- plus location means a lot with incidentals- get too far off their range, and you miss most of them. Yes, good locations many times have both incidentals and coyotes, but microing those locations, does a lot to decrease one, and increase the other.
so since limiting my tools didn't gain me anything, and I take more coyotes quicker by doing what I do rather than being subtle- why be subtle?
but agian- your methods are yours, and if using less or no urine works bette,r thats yuor call.
but for me, the idea that certain lures and using a lot of urine gets you more incidentals thna othre lures and a few drops of urine, just isnt true and I delegate it, insofar as practical application to me, as myth.

Tman I have used pan tension for many years and still take other critters, 3-3.5lbs of it with a sullivan gauge and also using PIT's on all my bridgers yet you still get big jacks, porkys which aren't light and others.
You see it as myth, I have seen it work to my advantage to go away from really loud lures at certain times, set right under a coyotes nose and go with fresh baits versus tainted at times and it has worked to lesson my incidentials. Many of them in the dead of winter are taken care of because of severe cold and location so I could use about anything and have less, but other times of the year what I have mentioned worked better for ME.
Nothing is 100% heck I have caught skunks on trail sets with no attractor they came down the trail prior to the coyote, but choosing certain attractors and amount made a differance through the years at certain times.

I hate porkys! Back in the day, they had blocks of wood laced with poison for Porky complaints. If still available, a couple weeks before cats season, I'd have a couple nailed to cedar trees at every location. Buy em by the gross...maybe the truck load!

One man's porky another man's possum? I've caught possum's numbering in the teens for a single check on a coon line. Never that bad in coyote sets but bad enough.

I too can remember days of mid teen possums- this year, only caught 5 all year, and 2 were in coon sets. With this mild winter, I suppose they will be all over next year.

Checked a location 2 days ago that had produced 7coyotes earlier in season before being pulled. An old set that had caught 4 big males had been hit again in the snow. Put in a new set just outside the old circle area with no urine and as I suspected it produced another big male this morning. You can catch them without urine. Remake got dosed down. We'll see what happens.

Urine soaked remake produced another male today. Remade it and chopped in a fresh backup 30 ft. away. It was pretty cold and windy on that knob, I think the coyote was glad to see me.
Yesterday, the location I referred to earlier where the fresh set had been patiently waiting finally saw it get some action. Now both sets are remakes slathered with urine.
