Thr Bridger 1.5 is about the best handling trap I've used.Great for rats and mink.I have found although a poor coon trap my brand new ones I bought last spring for rats seem to be holding the occassional coon better this fall.Maybe just dumb luck but I have held some big boys in them this fall.

100% opposite experience for me concerning duke 1.75s vs duke 1.5s
to the point I'll not set a duke 1.75 for rats/mink

I could show you 925 rats that would argue that point. I have NEVER used a better rat trap.

925 resets on a 1.75. Make me want to put my thumb in a glass of ice water just thinking about that many resets, LOL. Bourbon and water that is.
Beings I was taller one of the rat crew, I spotted them 1.75s in the truck before shorty did, and tossed him every one I could to set. "Aint them 1.75 a rat catching machine?" I'd rib him. "yea, thanks a lot" he'd reply, holding 2 thumbs up, one 2x as big as the other, LOL.
I will garentee you Ill see more front leg caught rats in 1.75 than 1.5's, but nice and high and never a ring off hardly. Just more leverage at end of larger pan makes for less tension what I see.
Tman, they got this thingy on traps call a "pan bolt" You take a screwdriver and loosen it..............................LOL

rk- both traps have free falling pans- can't get any looser than that...........
beav- so what? in an area with untold numbers of rats- who knows how many you missed each night before 1 snapped the trap.
I've caught literally 1000s of rats in #1 long springs- and I'll guarentee you that there were 10,000s more caught in them this year as well- yet, IMHO, the #1ls is a piss poor overall rat trap.
and i've caught a lot of rats in 1.75s over the years- both by design, and in coon sets.
but the fact remains, that for me, I found that over time in water, the 1.75s tightened up more than I liked, and I knew that if I didn't miss rats I for sure missed some mink.
so, for me, I decided that my idea of using all 1.75s in water, on my type of lines, was not the way to go. perhaps, with a lot of diddling around, I could get them so they did the job- but my question, again for me, was why?
I had no problems with using 1.5s- the idea of using the 1.75s was more why not more than need to.
as far as front foot vs rear foot- it must all depend on where and how you are trapping- in small creeks, with defined areas to trap (crawl unders, feedbeds, etc), I find that way over 90% in 1.5s are front foot catches. but I've never, for any practical purposes, used floats- how they crawl and work a trap on such, is beyond my ken, so if you say more front feet than back with 1.75s on floats, I have no doubt its true.

I guess I don't understand this comment about the trap stiffing up. But I guess if your leaving a trap for months at a time In the water It might happen but a short time and with a few daily catches It's not going to be a problem. At least I haven't witnessed It.

You guys running 1.75s for rats, are you weakening the springs at all (torch)? Geeze, I don' t know that I/d want to run (set) stock Duke 1.75 springs all day long. Do any of you still have a left thumb nail? The 1.5s hurt enough after awhile. I do like the MUCH larger pan of the 1.75, however...but still don't like the latch system (compared to a mink pan).

The 1.75 dukes would kill a mans thumb to set I think.
Gary, my traps have been in the water for 2 to 3 weeks and probably will be for another 8 to 12.
They will rust and stiffen up over time. Cant be sittin in the house watching the Pack for that to happen though.

Setting In the house LOL
I did 300 rats today and I'm about to go out and board 25 coon. Dam those western coon are huge. They flesh nice but they are big. In fact I don't have big enough stretchers for some of them. Guess I'll have to put them on coyote boards.

I've put ALOT of coon on a 9 inch board and get a 38 40 inch stretch out of em.
House? Shed? Whats the difference, traps are stowed away.
When you get caught up, I could use some help.
