On my spade stakes I just run the cable through the 1/8" hole In the spade and crush on a stop button. On the trap end I just run the cable through the hole In the universal swivel and crush on a stop button. Never had one fail yet. The KISS method.
I use 16" of cable I drive the cable out of sight and I don't set the anchor, I let the animal do that. So far so good.
In hard ground I still use Re bar.

beav, you either have perfect soil, or are lucky- I never used to set them either, until I lost a couple- now I set all, and in wet soil like last year, more then a few came right out- had a couple locations where I could even set them, and had to use rebar. I'm using 16" cable as well, on earth anchors- which could well be the problem as well I guess.

Tman wet soils and good farm soils might try some wolf fangs I have some and they hold well, but again I have far more soils where rebar is quicker, faster and more fool proof for me than anchors. Most of mine cross stake (2) 24" rebar and nothing is getting anywhere.
1.5" pogos work well to, I have used them on snares more than traps but they hold solid in looser soils that I have. If you have even looser soils the 2" washers.
If I was back in Iowa and the majority of the land I trapped back there I would be using alot of wolf fangs.

I have trapped the same ground for over 14 years and know what I can and can't get away with. On new ground I will see If my anchors will set. But in most cases you will know as soon as you drive one If It will hold or not. You can also cross stake earth anchors and It's a lot less screwing around then cross staking re bar. A quick link will get It done.

Re bar works well and has for many years tough to get away from it.

I had a 100 wolf fangs last year and they out performed anything else I have tried as far as earth anchors, no looking back for me on this.
