I've never looked for dens but occasionally stumble across them. have seen 4-5 like this over the past 10 years- most I see cause I see pups by them going in and out. Right in the middle of nothing- bare hay fields and plowed land. you would think they would den in timber/coulees, etc- but if I've seen that many, one would think a good % do just that. fox dens seem to always messy but coyote dens, in my limited experience, seem clean like this one. If you look close, there is one turd at bottom center. plenty of tracks going in. for those with denning experience- how much do they actually dig their own dens? I'm guessing this was old badger, from size of mound and plenty of badger workings in the fields. Do they find more dens than they make?

You will find them in areas where it is more quiet and less human activity "generally" they will be close to water and in many cases they are tucked away and hidden very well, under rocks, in brush piles, and ours seem to like poision IVY LOL. Make for some fun extraction in these cases. You can find them in the middle of large pastures with little intrusion and water close by as well.
I have found a few within 1 mile of towns, one was on large hill with rocky outcroppings and a creek 700 yrds away 1/2 mile off a busy hwy yet the pasture was only used in the fall time. Made for a nice setup and sheep less then 1.5 miles away.

took a den the other day called in shot the adults female was on den hole when I called to her, could tell my her howling approx distance so after doing the deed went looking for the den typical location was found 3/4 a hill side in the rocks, lone buck brush bush right by hole to offer concelment from birds of prey nice hole going down into hill side below rocks thinking large pocket to raise pups down under ground, water was 600 yrds away. View gave them a good look at the country side and 2 very visable trails evenin the short grass the trail to the sheep and the trail comming back to the den from the sheep less than 1/8 mile a part. Everything they needed in a un used cattle pasture that gets used for only 3 months in the fall.
