I've seen deer legs in fences like that. Thats what was left after the coyotes cleaned up the rest.

Govt. has specifications for the distance between the top wire and the second wire.
I remember when I was a kid seeing hundreds of deer hung in fences on migeation routes before they made the simple change.

Looks like he could have gone through one of the spaces instead of jumping. Jim

I can't remember the distances now, I'm sure the BLM could tell you. Running a smooth wire on the bottom helps the antelope because they go under instead of jump.

Of all the ways to go, that would be a bad one but still better than mange.

after studing the pictures i call BS the ground is not tore up around the frount feet.also the way the leg is weaved through the fence.most leg catches in fences are at the hock.if you look the fox would have to been walking down the top of the fence to get hung like that. i am not saying coyote fox and deer dont get hung up because i have seen a lot fence caught critters, iam just saying this looks like it was staged like a lot of his other pictures.just my 2 cents worth What would anyone have to prove "staging" this? I have no doubt, considering the source, that this is 100% real event.

I see what he is saying. The ground duff is not disturbed at all. An animal trying to escape would have the dead grass dug away dwon to dirt. The dried blood looks like a small pool. No hair knocked out hanging anywhere. How did the fox get his hind leg through a four inch mesh and then around the wire. Not saying staged but looks weird. "Considering the source" who knows?

Still think it's staged?

Hard to tell does look strange like not between the top wire and the fence but leg caught in top square of fence and then body back through the square. Yup set up? Jim

WHY would anyone stage something like this?? What purpose would it serve??
I'd argue you'd need a limp fresh killed fox to even attempt to mimic this scene!!
So what motive would a person take a fresh killed fox, (our season ended 3 weeks ago too) and wind them up in a fence?

If you look you can see where the grass is disturbed on both sides of the fence

You non-believers ever think that ground is frozen here in Iowa in the month of February? At the speed the fox was going the force it's head hit may have caused death shortly after. For example, smack your head as hard as you can and then hang upside down for awhile.

How about fox running on deep snow attempts to jump over woven wire part of fence and catches leg in top of woven wire. Fox turns to try and get untangled, crawls through the top cell of woven wire and now is really entangled. Snow melts during the warm spell (up to 70 degrees) that we had recently and fox is left hanging in fence showing minimal signs of struggle.
Of course the conspiracy theory always sounds more attractive.

Ground looke a little disturbed to me. Also, there is a thing called shock, usually critters seem pretty tough, but maybe this one didn't take so well to being hung like this! Hard to believe anyone would question the reality of this. As mentioned, one heckuva nasty way to go! Happy trapping. ScottW

It looks realistic to me. Given the timing and situation it seems realistic and I see no gain for anyone to fake the picture.
