River ice Beav, we're waiting for the flood right now. Can't wait. I'm stuck trapping in ice slots right now and rats don't move much.
Putting these floats on the ice now would be a "bye bye" situation for most of them If I had to do that.
BTW, leaving now checking the few traps I have installed.

We have open water and I'm running a few beaver traps just to stay out of the house. Rats are every where we can keep the Incidental rats but we have a jaw size restriction when beaver trapping nothing less then a 5 1/2 " jaw spread. We use a lot of #3s and 2s for beaver trapping LOL
Lots of rats getting killed on the roads right now most aren't worth picking up.

Good to know Matt, rats just started to show up today in flooded little creeks...its starting.
Still ice here... with this 10 Celsius temperature... think I'll be able to set more traps soon. I think after next week end... It will be the big weeks coming. Can't wait, I'm almost ready.

I always liked the old Victor square jawed #2 with the original swivel off the end of the frame (center swiveled will not lay / set flat on a rat float), they grab the rats up high and weigh enough to drown them quick.

Thanks, I will.
It fits, coil springs 1½ -1¾ & 2, Long Spring 1-1½ and 2 and I'm using a mixed of brands and sizes on them.

Stef, I made a number of rat floats just like those many years ago had some good luck with them! Are you going to use bait, lure or both? What sort of bait you using! I've use turnips and Apple in past! Man that was a long time ago over 26 years now!!LOL Always loved trapping rats! Regards, Ed

I have no doubt these will work fine, however I like to be able to set at least 2 traps on a float in order to take doubles.

Stef, How do you plan on using them? Leghold or bodygrip? Do you bait them or just use lure?

I made that style 20 some years ago. I found them to ride low in water and become waterlogged and riding too low in water after a few days. Do you varnish or seal them to keep from becoming waterlogged? I can see where in current that design would have its advantages, but awful thick to stack any volume on a road line where couple 100 are needed.
Ive been running 10x28 x1", and need a piece of 3/4 pink foam to keep from sinking. Only 2" thick so can be stacked in volume for out of state trips.
SDtrapper, running above size, w/ 2 traps, about 3/4 of catches the 1st rat gets in both traps. Im just running stock chains on duke 1.5 for most part. what the trick to keep first rat for getting caught in both traps?

Stef
Is that logging chain on that trap? I assume that helps with drowning the catch, but seems awful heavy and expensive.

Do you mean that you have so many rats that they are getting run over on the roads? Up here we, meaning me, are lucky to get a few dozen a season. Would love to see all the rat huts that some of you talk about. Some of those marshes must be huge!!

I make mine out of 2x4's in an H shape. Trap goes in each side of the H and chain end is attached to the bottom of the float. I adjust the chain length with a piece of wire (if needed). Pan faces the opening resulting in front foot catch (usually) and rat goes down fast. I think the trick is to keep the chain short enough where the rat cant get to the second trap, yet long enough to drown quickly. Not sure if mine would work good in fast water though.
Gotta go skin rats for a few hours, had too much good luck today.
