Shoot the longest barrel you feel you can manage. In a semi I shoot 30" you have a better sight plain for your longer shots. Why shoot that 10 when you can do the same with a 12 2 3/4"

30" barrels are too unmanageable in tight cover where a shotgun shines. I shoot an old ithaca mag 10, chopped to 26" with screw ins, sandblasted and full camo w/ sling. Ive yet to see a 12 gauge 3 1/2 compare to the dense pattern a 10 throws with 2 1/8 oz of copper plated buffered BB. Ive shot several fox at over 60 yards with this rig, and one at 78 yards paced with my long stride in Wyo praire, pattern still dense enough to roll them. Twice doubled on coons running side by side at 30-40 yards. Coyotes hit the dirt stone dead at 40, 50 yards they are hurt enough they aint going far if not dead. Not a fun rig to pack, but the killing ability of a 10 is something that really has to be seen to appreaciate.

The 10 used to be the cats azz, but since the advent of hevi shot in B and T your covered for anything bigger than a turkey with plenty of killing power from a 3" 12 ga shell and very dense patterns. I have heard good things about hevi 13 for turkeys which throws the densest patterns of any load I know of and has set records for pattern density and distance. I shoot rem 11-87's priced right and can take a beating, then clean them up nice and ready to go again. I have an orginal from 1987 that has had many, many rounds through it and still works like a dream, my newer one is black synthetic both 26" barrels. I don't shoot skeet or trap much at all, I kill things with these and they do a fine job for the money. If this lead BS continues to catch fire across the country which I hope common sense prevails in more areas than not, but if it comes down to steel or hevi shot, I guess I'll suck up the additional cost and shoot nothing but hevi shot versus steel. If I'm out to kill stuff then I want a load that will do it a very high% of the time and hevi shot T has proven it's worth to me. I don't crank out 100's of rounds so the cost while higher isn't a big burden and I can offset some cost with copper plated 4 buck for coyotes at times in denser cover. Here is a good link for those that want more info: www.gunsandammomag.com/ammunition/hevi_hitter/
