"and, BTW, they are ugly. LB " -------------------------------------- Hey LB, Would you please stop beating around the bush and just tell us straight out how you feel about AR's?

LB really needs to come out of his shell a little...........
I've decided against the AR,final straw being the weight(or more to the point the *counter*weight I'd need to balance the saddle)..........but carry on,its a good thread.

"Scoped up right they are good to 500 yds easy" I would love to get all of the people that have made that statement on a line and see how many can put up or shut up. Not trying to start a fight but that number sure gets thrown around a lot. No .22 center fire in existence is an "easy 500 yd" killer.

**No .22 center fire in existence is an "easy 500 yd" killer.**
I agree with that,if you want to get real depressed, take your fav yote gun, practice out to 500 meters, then move the target o 600 meters.A whole different world.
I for one and not at all a fan of the mega guns the 3K and up superCals with bal charts and 8 boxes of hand tuned loads.....all to say "I whacked something at 1000 yds"........a neat hobby to be sure, just not my cup of tea.
But to watch the old timers ping iron with a Sharps at 6-7 and 800 meters..........man thats dancing with the one what brought ya.

Edge, I've been a bolt fan all my life, A year ago I bought a ATN night scope, the fastest and easyist way to mount it was on an AR flat top. My only exp. with black gun's up till then had been with M16's , and they didn't much for me. when I set this rifel up with hand loads it shot way beond any expectation I had. It's another tool to get the job done

Been a solider. No truck driving. Love the AR. 10 round clip is just fine. never shot more than three times at a whack, except in May on a pd family mound. Grew up with single shot savage went to the Army right out of high school and the AR was the first real gun I fired.

Standard DCM matches are shot out to 1000 meters, All one needs to do is set up there AR, check the wind and range a few sighters to get you dialed in and any Praire dog is dead meat constantly at 500 yards or more.

So. If I would want to play professional golf, I just need to buy a set of clubs like Tiger Woods uses?

Randy, And if you want easy 500 yard kills on coyotes, all you need to do is teach the coyotes to stand still long enough for you to take a few "sighters".

Hopefully we have combined match shooting and coyote shooting(temporarily)but lets now go back to coyote shooting;which by its very nature disallows "sighters"at static targets.
Romans117;how tricked out is your AR?The out of the box price varies from a few hundred to a few thousand........wat do you consider the basics as far as "must haves"on the AR? For practical purposes lets say to build a 300 yd gun in .223. Again,my experience is limited, believe me if I *knew* something,I'd *say*something.
When I posted originally I was looking at a 2K$ gun, upon further scrutiny,I think for a mud bath truck gun I could get by cheaper, but I dont want a spray and pray either(like a AK).

I think 300 is the far end for a .223. Just not much (energy) left at that range for coyote sized stuff. Many out of the box bolt guns are sub MOA (a must for 250 plus shooting). Am I to undersand it takes two grand to do that with a black gun? And you only have a 2.5 lb trigger when your finished? Not nocking it I think a tricked out AR is bad ass but obviosly not for everyones budget.

Edge I do not own one, yet. However, a great brother, a decent uncle and a good freind do. I am partial to the Bushmaster and Colt. The option for uppers and lowers are unlimited. I am not the one to talk to on the many options you could go with.

Well,OK,but if you *hear* anything, let me know.......I think a 300 yd AR is quite possible for under a grand, maybe way under. The expense comes,IMHO,when its made into something it was never intended to be;an OVER 300 yd gun.

Edge, check out AR15.com. The Build it your self section shows what can be done for small bucks. infact the entire site is pretty good info. I assembled one on a Superior arms lower and like it for walking in it weighs alot less than my model 700 bull bbl. www.ar15.com/forums/forum.html?b=3&f=4
