Are your cubbies vertical or horizontal?

Horizontal, up north on my lines I have no problem but down here in North Bay the fisher seem to refuse to enter the set. Cheers Jim

I use horizontal also with few problems.
Buddies further south are big on buckets on the ground. They like the square ones baited with beaver. Stef's XLDC is pretty popular also.

I use boxes or pails on the ground with 160s and 220s, beaver bait and no lure.
They will refuse to enter probably as much as 30 percent of the time judging by tracks in the snow. I think they saw another fisher get caught or just do not like the trap.
The ones that don't enter the trap, I call them seed fisher.

I like pole sets with #220s Belisle at chest height
Had refusals with smaller traps

iam useing wire cages that collapse flat when not in use with a 220 and as far as i can tell have had no refusals. we have had snow here since the first 3 days of the season. i do cover them with evergreen and leaves to break them up a bit. it seems to have better scent dispersal being wire than in a bucket or box

Boxes are usually a good set on the ground but at this time of the year with the snow coming deeper every day, I don't like boxes for that reason. I don't check my sets everyday that's why I'm using pole sets... almost 0 incidental catches with big #220s with the exception of a couple coon if there's some on your territory

In my limited fisher trapping experience I found I got more refusals with the pole set versus the body grip box on the ground.

Not much to see. Typical "if it can climb you can catch it" set.

Do you put some Gusto or other lure at the base of the leaning pole to get them to climb. Or do they pick up the bait scent in the box alone?

Musher my sets are almost the same set up, I am guessing that you are using a 120 size trap? I use mostly Stef's XLDC I really like the new cream style. Cheers Jim

Jim I like the basic cubby on the ground.
I prefer pails simply because they are cheap, easy to stack and they work for me.
If I was able to go on long extended checks I'd probably put em up in the air but I am checking at most every three days.
I get some refusals but its manageable.
Seemed to me when I put them in the air I had more refusals with fisher not wanting to climb

Steve, I was looking at your thread the other day and that was what got me thinking. I am going to try some square buckets and 220 size traps. You made it look easy with your pictures. Cheers Jim

When you make the notches with the square traps, use a 1 inch round drill for the hole cutter then jig saw out the slot 2 inches out. There was a formula worked out by the Alberta standards guys how much slot you need. something with the jaws closing on the animal then pushing out, advoiding the stomach rupturing damage. Neck caught vs double wammy. Don't know if you are allowed to put metal into live trees in your area of Ontario, but drywall screws/washer/ drill gun and its up/ down fast with square buckets. free bucket source= restraunt trade, feta cheese= Greek restraunts or Italian

How deep are the slots in length 3 inches or less and do you push the trap right back to the back of the box. Cheers Jim

Does Verville Alberta test lab have a web page ? That is where the work was done on in regards to the slot depth/height spacing. It all has to do with the mechanics of when and how the trap goes off. 220 are probably? . rivet to bar lenght 3.5 inches??? thats the slot depth max. You do not want the trap in the back of the box, hang up with bait on firing etc. On another note I have come across some old male fishers, and wondered how they survived. Their faces were deformed, which got my cuirosity. My brother is a retired Dentist and he is always collecting teeth. He preped the skull and to what we could figure this old male had a 120 go off on his nose/ side of face. The top of the orbit of the eye was shattered and the back molars roots were damaged, it lower jaw had broken and healed. one canine was broken and the other was growing through it's nostrels. Body weight and fat conditions were normal with all this. Sorry no immediate pics, skull in his "So you think you have tooth problems"collection @ Univ. This old boy's middle name must have been LUCKY. Anyone else seen this in trapping? Moderator you can pull this if not appropiate.

I was doing a search on square nursery buckets and then news paper boxes and came up with this company. Then found it again in a in a link on trapping Marten in Alaska and the guy ordered 40 of them for $3.00 ea. Not sure how old this was but it's would only cost a phone call to find out and they come in many colors and 3 sizes and seems they ship small quanities. www.continentalproducts.com/newspaperboxes-duratube.html

Cowboy Mel @ NAFA's his brother manufactures them in Alberta and they are a lot less than that. As per my post above I would stay away from 120 on fisher.
