I recently was asked if i could catch and hold fox and coyotes for a live running pen. In WV we can do that but the only restricition is that they have to sold in the same county as they are taken. In this case it is in the same county, just opposite ends.
With that said I have a buddy that has access to expanded metal and is going to weld up a couple of cages to haul in. We were discussing the sizes this evening and came up with 16 inches tall x 16 inches wide x 3 feet long. Is this in the ball park for fitting reds and coyotes or do they need to be any bigger. Obviously a red or two in one cage and coyotes in the other. No mixing and matching.
These also have to be hauled in the back of my mini-truck as none of the line here in WV can be ran with the P/U truck. So i need something big enough but not to big to haul.
Thanks Matt
P.S. The space in the mini-truck is approx. 3 ft x 4 ft that i have to work with but need two seperate cages due to multi-stuff line. I just need to be able to take them out and haul them in the back of the pickup to the running pen.
Suggestions on size or am I fine witht eh above size?

A 12x12 live trap will hold a few fox, I built a pen out of horse panels for coyotes. When I am setting traps every so often I will set a live trap where if the one in the truck gets full all I have to do is grab one at the next stop, that way I do not have to haul around extra live traps. Here is a pic of the way I have my truck fixed.

easy way to put 2-3-4 fox in one coon box trap is after first fox in, tip trap on end. push 4-5-6 re rods thru to hold fox #1 in, then load #2 and pull rods. you can do it till they are sardines.

Ahhhhhhhhhh, i see the light LOL. I don't catch many but if i do stumble onto a couple ike yesterday morning, I would like to at lease put two in a cage to keep one open for the occasional coyote.
Bob--- Are my dimensions of 16 in x 16in and three feet long big enough to handle one coyote.

way to big. they will go in a regular coon box trap. they are kind of square then, but works fine. I have one communal cage in the truck and have put 12 at a run in it before. the last few you kind of have to push back those in already and all 12 are kind of square, but no squabbles and tight pack just till I get home each day

That is big enough for 2 (in a pinch) and when loading yote # 2 in the cage (if standing straight up), yote #1 will not run out if your right there doing the deed and keeping close attention to what is going on...once the yote is in the transport cage (directly from the trap into cage) most are big babys...

3 reds in the coon trap, room for another , maybe 2. this'll work in a pinch, but wouldn't make a habit of it.

Ya those fox will be gone In a heart beat. When i was building my holding pen for coyotes I used hog panels but I welded rod through all the 6x6 openings. But I ran out of wire and left one hole open. Well the first coyote went through that 6x6 hole, he left a bit of hide behind but It got out.
My transport cages were built the same size as a large box trap 14x14x36. Stand the cage on end drop the yote In ass first, they fold up just like a jack knife and slip right In. Never try and put them In head first.
I had two fox tun on the third one and kill It before I could do anything about It. They were In a wire dog kennel.

We killed some of those small MS deer and then opened up the top and tossed in the whole deer. Those fox were caught that day and were still In the back of the truck.
Didn't have to go Bob my driver decided to take his girl friend with him. He said she was better company then me. Sure didn't break my heart.

you know, I had a thought, you might make a compartment door to cut it in half at 3/4 to 1/4 whatever, and doors on both ends. on days of a fox, swing the sepatation door closed and load fox from one end, coyotes from the other

I had that same thought too Bob while out running today. I think I have a plan in my noggin for a 1/2 seperation, so we'll see how it works out.
I do believe i will forgo the pvc catch pole and make one out of metal. That pvc catch pole just doesn't have enough balls for a coyote. The red the other day gave it all it wanted till i got him by the tail. Then he was putty in my hands. LOL
Thanks for the thoughts fellas.

If you have good hand strength you can just pin down your reds and greys grab them behind the ears and there Is no need for a catch pole. But you better have a good grip. but If your going to lift your yotes off the ground a steel catch pole Is what you need.
