Arlo and Jim - Do you guys both use whitefish heads? Or, do you seine the whitefish and use chunks? If the heads, do you get them from commercial fishermen?
Cisco should work well then, as they are about the same fish, only smaller.

I get whitefish backbones with meat attached from a fishery after they run them thru a filleting machine. Jim

I use whitefish bellies, I cut of fillets we get from local fisherman for the restraunt. We have to trim belly fat of and it works out perfect for me as I don't have to waste freezer space until just before season. Most of my bait collecting is done on the time clock! Also have used smelt, rat legs, and suckers with good results! Am gonna try the whitefish heads this year though. vanmeer

I use to use alot of whitefish heads when I couldn`t get smelt.Since I hardly ever get smelt anymore,I have gone to whitefish bellies all the time for mink bait.Later Arlo

Like the Lion, I don't use bait at all until we start having consistent temps below 20. Then I use up all of the rat carcasses. I do however place a stick dipped in Fouineur in about 30% of my pockets all season long.

I think that most baits will work but the main ingredient Is the temp. When it gets nasty out there mink do things they don't do during warm weather.
Example: I found where someone had skinned a coon and threw It In the creek. The carcass had wsahed up In drift pile. Nothing touched that carcass untill the first snow fall. Then It was a mink smorgasboard, If I rember I took 6 mink off that carcass In just few weeks.
