A little story I wrote last winter and am trying to decide if I want to submit it somewhere in a trapping mag,
Steve, If this is in the wrong place I am sorry and please move it for me
The Nightmare Begins on Dec. 02, 2003.
I put in a couple of REALLY great looking grinner sets yesterday, Dec. 2, 03. Figured if I couldn't get any thing else, I could at least get a lowly possum.
I was out checking my traps this morning and was at the dairy farm where I put in the Grinner Sets. After checking my cage traps in the milk house and my other sets around the pasture and not catching anything. I headed out. on the way out I noticed what I thought was movement along the fence row where I put in the Grinner Sets that I didn't see coming in. I stopped the truck in the drive and got out with the binoc's and I was right low and behold I did see something move, it looked like a Grinner to me. So I drove across the field to the set and low and behold I had caught the BIGGEST Grinner of my live. It was a 45 pound male COYOTE! I dispatched the critter not using the possum choke hold, and remade the set. On the way back across the field to the drive, I seen movement on a small knoll that I didn't see before either on the way in. I swung over to check it out and there was another one of them BIG possums in another one of my Grinner sets. now I started to cussing the yote out for ruining a great Grinner set. I dispactched that one and remade that set also. I had a mock set on that small knoll at the beginning of the season and it was hit a couple of nights ago. Thats when I decided to put in a Grinner Set there. Well back to the story. Who would have guest, my first real attemp at taking a mess of lowly possums and i get coyotes! two to boot in sets made for grinners. JUST MY LUCK! I was getting fusterated though, I couldn't catch the target animal.
One of the yotes was a reddish color and the other was a brindle grey and black. The reddish one had a rub all the around its shoulder area, like it was in a snare and pulled out. The reddish one was a female and the brindled one was a male, with a great looking pelt.
the MORAL of the story is: if you want to catch K-9's you need to make sets for grinners. It only goes to show that a little reverse PHILOSOPHY in trapping works. since everyone else was taking possums in their K-9 set, I figured I would make sets for grinners.
this is a true story as ownly I could have though this theroy up. ;D the best part about trapping is THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX ;D Woody
