A recently widowed woman I know is selling off some guns. Among the collection is a .22 hornet. I think this would be a great fox gun. I have done some reading elsewhere and it seems like it should fit the bill for fox and other varmints.
Basically, I guess we are always looking for a fur-friendly gun and when it comes to fox, not much to chose from that has a reasonable range without making a mess.
For those have taken fox with the .22 hornet, what gr. bullet are you shooting, at what velocities and at what range is pelt damage reasonable?
Thanks

I have used them on fox , not real bad damage bu pretty much all were passthrus. It is a nice little round though , not a big crack to it when it goes off either , a afirly slow and usually very accurate caliber. Tried the V max bullets and the 45 grain hollow points. Got better accuracy with the hollow points but think the vmax would cut donw on damage to skins

DO NOT buy a Ruger 77/22 Hornet if you want a 22 Hornet.
Buy a CZ 527 in 22 Hornet instead.
The Ruger was the most innacurate rifle I've ever owned and almost everyone I know who had one had the same problem. It should have had 'Skeet' stamped on the barrel because it threw patterns rather than shot groups.
Better yet forget the Hornet and buy a .222 Rem. or .221 Fireball and handload for it. Reduced loads easily duplicate a Hornet and can be very quiet.

10 1/2 Grains of IMR 4227 with a 40Gr. V-Max and you will get no pass throughs or exits on even our light little grey fox. Works for coyotes out to 125 yards too. Also do like FWS saiys. I am going to the 221 Fireball for the same reasons, yet still be able to take coyotes to a couple hundred yards. Steve

Dang , just read the rest of post , I stopped at a local gun shop today cause i had time to kill. Ended up with a 22hornet in the Remington 799 , I think it is. A pretty little gun with a mauser type action. Figured it would be a good one to get my 7 year old daughter shooting on.

I have one of the old H&R, pre-NEF, handi rifles in .22 Hornet. I like the way it shoots and it does all I ask of it. But I would like a bolt gun in that calibre as I'm partial to them.

Have you used your .22Hornet on coyotes? What is your opinion on bullet size, and limits on range? What kind of exit hole?
We are all interested in minimizing pelt damage. The popularity of small caliber rifles has grown rapidly over the past few years, there is, collectively, much more epxerience regarding the performance of these calibers on coyotes. Many swear by the .17 Remington as good fur gun, while many claim too many lost wounded animal.
How does the 22 Hornet stack up performance wise with the .17 Remington?

Not SGt , here , but the 22 hornet is not a very long range gun at all. the 17 rem is a good 300 yard gun while I would probably limit my shots with the hornet to 150-175. Slow accurate round , and just plain fun to plink with. I have much more experience with the 17 , but have owned a few hornets also.Hornet is quiter also.

I am looking for a lightweight, small caliber centerfire for fox and coyote. I know the .17 Remington is a great round but I dont reload (yet) and from what I have read, reloading is required for maximal performance.
Therefore, I am looking for something that has a reasonable availability of factory ammo. How fincky is the .22 hornet when it comes to factory ammo? whats the avialability of facotry ammo for this round?
I live in the mountains in NE Utah. Most shots would be well under 150 yards given the scrub oak, junipers etc etc.

Most of the places I hunt only offer shots at 200 or less. For that the Hornet is fine. I make sure I have a reference point and let them work in past that point. The Hornet is like anything else you have to try different loads to get a good group and then fine tune at the loading bench. The lighter 40gr loads seldom go through and through. But they don't hold a group as tight for me farther out. 50gr hold good at range but some bullets go clear through. I haven't found a small hollow point that I like yet, so these are soft points. With the smaller lighter Hornet you have to be picky on your bullet placement. Hope that helps.
