Well a lot of times when they were in the trap I would shoot them in the head and if the shot wasn't just right it wouldn't kill them. where as when you shot them with a long rifle in the lungs they died right away. HP

I know there is a lot of rifle guys here. But can I talk about shotguns. This is all I have besides an '06.
I have a super full choke (Turkey choke) and my gun can shot 3 1/2 mags. What kind of pattern am I looking for out of this gun. Kills turkeys great but not sure about coyotes. And yes I understand this would probally be under 40 yrd shots.

Probably not a good choke to use with large shot sizes like lead BB since it will deform a lot of pellets and hurt the pattern density.
I used a full choke with Federal 3 " 1 7/8oz. lead BB that worked pretty well but I don't know if Federal still makes that load.

This was discussed below under "dead coyote shells". I patterned 3 1/2 " T shot at 60yd, 50 yd, 40yd, all on full choke and on each had 8 pellets in the 6" circle. I would assume that would make a kill. HP

HP,
I wouldn't use a .22 rimfire. You need to anchor those coyotes in heavy cover or you will lose too high a percentage. Use a shotgun if the range is close. When aerial hunting we use BBB steel. My choice would be 4 buck lead for calling or copper coated BBs.

Shotguns huh? Although I almost always carry my custom .257 Ackley these days, I have quite a lot of experience in whacking coyotes with shotguns. I did a lot of pattern testing several years ago. I tested several choke tubes, and several choke/load combo's in both ten and twelve gauge guns. Most of my coyotes were taken with copper plated and buffered BB's. Federal "premium" and Winchester XX magnums gave the best patterns. I found that the 2&3/4" fodder shot more dense pattern than the 3" stuff. I had trouble finding the 2&3/4" fodder, so used the 3" stuff most of the time. My Browning BPS with Hastings .655 card shooters choke has sure kill range of 45 yards on coyotes.
