When they first came out I was all for them, the way it was portrayed, basically as proof of what we as trappers do and use to be effective and humane. And I'm still for that aspect.
But there seems to be a shift away from that and more of a leaning to idiot proof trapping.A way to find a constant in the field. There is none for evey situation.Just like hunting(and I'm sure hunting will fall victim in the future) different calibers are used for deer or coyotes, are they all perfect? No. But different situations and shooter experience plays a big part and each requires itself to find it's own consistency.
The way BMP's seem to be going,is that instead of trappers adjusting to there situation, there situation needs to adjust to the BMP.And I'm sure it's a stepping stone in applying BMP's in the same fashion to hunting and fishing as well in the future.
You can call me a BMP blamer if you like, but we know that term is just to distract from views such as mine and to try and push the BMP's uncontested.
I applaud the FTA in there stance. They went to the members and asked there input on what to do,not behind closed doors, and the decision announced at a later date as a surprise. The members responded and the FTA took there stance. After all we're Free Trappers.Just because the FTA took the stance they did, doesnt mean there totally against the BMP's,theres members still working on issues,it's just that,IMO, the FTA needed to send a strong message that the process needs to get back to what it was intended as mentioned above.
The one problem I see with the BMP's,is it'll be used against us,restricting our equipment eventually, with sayings such as "it's quoted in the BMP's".
Western trappers who think snares will always be around because of check times and etc.,think again, all you need is someone to come around and push for 24 hour check time and quote how the CS is an approved BMP tool, how many miles you have to travel to check sets will be a moot point. It'll be considered inhumane to leave a set unattended that long or doesnt fit into the BMP protocol, just like holding coon in water.
Common sense is losing ground, and PC and idiot proofing everything we do in everyday life is becoming common practice. It's always been a struggle to be free trappers, and someday there wont be any free trappers or thinkers left,it'll all be dictated.
I've been kinda burnt out on all the political stuff,it just seems to be going in a vicious circle, kinda like a circle jerk, and the ones getting jerked the most are trappers.
